Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

FOW has totally changed my approach to work- for the worse

My entire outlook on working for Cigna has changed since the brilliant “Future of Work” plan was implemented. I am a senior manager who’s been at Cigna for 17 years. I lead a team of 37 people but only one is in my same office. I have worked from home for the past 11 years and have always been a high performer. Now I’m being forced back into the office. It takes me 65 minutes to drive to the office with no traffic so I’m wasting more than 2 hours in the car each day. I also have 2 children and now can’t be around for most of their activities.

I used to log into the network at home and start working by 7:30. I would work until about 5:00, sometimes stepping away for around 30 minutes to take one of my kids to daycare, practice, etc. Most nights I would log back in after dinner for an hour or two to follow up on some things. So when I actually add it up I was averaging 10-11 hours per day.

Now, with 2+ hours of pointless commuting time (+ morning prep) it would make it a 12-14 hour day. Sorry but no. Instead, I’m getting into the office by 8:30 and leaving between 4:30-5:00. I refuse to stay one minute past 5:00. In the past, with the flexibility of working from home and without having the wasted commuting time, I didn’t mind putting in several extra hours of work each day. Not any more. I’m suddenly watching the clock like a factory worker and not putting in ONE OUNCE of extra effort or time.

I’m sure I’m not the only one whose outlook has totally changed. Cigna was so stupid and short sighted with this illogical policy. They just ensured that people are now going to do only the bare minimum. What a joke it is to hear Cordani and the rest of the ELT lie to us about how Cigna embraces “vitality.” Hilarious. My life and “vitality” is worse in multiple ways now thanks to Cigna and the company is getting much less of a commitment out of me. Well done!

All employees have the choice to either accept the FOW as it is, or look elsewhere. But PLEASE - let's stop pretending the goal is "collaboration" and "employee well-being." I find it insulting they think we're stupid enough to believe such nonsense.

“Just wait til they slowly introduce 100% in the office for us. Heard from a pretty good source it’s coming.”

Oh it’s coming.
In their attempt to deflect blame, they will frame it as “since Phase 1&2 compliance was bad, everyone has to work in the office.”

Same boat but I took it a step further. Not only do I no longer work anymore than 40 hours per week (used to average 48) but I will intentionally make mistakes that I have to spend a few hours a week correcting. If I am going to be in an office just to sit at a picnic table (I don’t even get a cubicle so I have no drawers or any space) and be on remote meetings all day anyway because Cigna wants to keep its tax breaks and justify its real estate/lease budget then Cigna will take a cut. FOW is a pay cut for me since I spend $100 a week now on gas that I didn’t before and I have to pay state income tax that I didn’t have to before…then my work contributions will be deducted accordingly. And I was hired WAH in 2018. They got great work out of me before. Pay me less and get less work…this is business and you get what you pay for.

Agree 100%. When I was WFH, I used to go above and beyond all the time. I would start the day early and stay late catching up and completing work. My productivity was very high. Now, I refuse to work outside of the office, I decline meetings if they fall out of my time in the office, and let things fall behind. I am wasting so much time in traffic to go into a office I never once set foot in to work with some strangers who happen to show up and have nothing to do with me or my team.

They're probably forcing Medicare people into the office so they'll quit so the company doesn't have to pay severance.

My office is nowhere near capacity! There are tons of empty desks everywhere! What makes zero sense is- why force Medicare org in if they will be leaving anyway? Don’t they think they’ve caused this org enough turmoil yet? All the layoffs, constant re-orgs, and transition work…not to mention they literally sold the employees. I have yet to meet anyone that see’s any value in FOW, thinks it’s productive, is collaborating at all (unless standing around chatting about personal stuff counts). We are all stressed, unable to get our work done like we did before, unable to take on any extra work or projects, sitting in traffic 2+ hours a day, missing out on after work activities & family time, spending a lot more money, the list goes on & on. Now the main priority is making sure I’m at the office 3 days week. I get what I can done and no longer stress about what’s not done. Vitality has went from great to horrible mentally & physically.

“ The employee survey should be interesting, if one is ever distributed again. Anyone have an insight about when/if it will come out?”

The survey already closed. Only a few people were selected. I did not touch it.

"Is your building at capacity? Perhaps your office doesn't have space for all nearby employees and these employees are designated no seat assigned?"

It isn't at capacity. My boss told me flat out when this started that 'all' our leaders were designated in office. Either he lied or didn't know himself.

Two in my direct leadership are as near to offices as I am but they are still designated WFH. So two sets of rules for mgmt and peons, it seems.

They need to hire Davis Clarke.
He might be the only person I’ve heard of being into returning to the office.

Like the other post stated, the stench of greed is all over Cigna, but not only that, it's all over our country. I support the capitalism at it's core, but not this. These new cooperate leaders are not fair, they have grown ever more greedy unchecked and FOW is a tactic to increase attrition to gain more profit. I bet in a few weeks Cigna will try their best to use buzz words and cooperate speak to convince us we are a great company.

But that’s the point ! They would love to either fire people, move their jobs to India or totally close the roles. DC is trying to make some changes and those will surely cause disruption But he wants profits end of the day. Our comfort and convinience is not vital. That’s because they can easily replace you with someone cheaper or they will realize they don’t need the role at all

People need to realize one thing. Everyone is dispensable at work including DC. So don’t burn yourself out for this job if you have an option. Take charge of your life. I’m

I don't understand why they included people who were WAH before COVID in the scope of FOW. I was in office before COVID and so I'm sort of whatever about having to go back, but for my coworkers who successfully worked at home for a decade plus before COVID, why would that change? It's bizarre

The coworkers with whom I speak candidly are all burned out and struggling to do the minimum. FOW certainly isn’t making that any better for anyone.
