My entire outlook on working for Cigna has changed since the brilliant “Future of Work” plan was implemented. I am a senior manager who’s been at Cigna for 17 years. I lead a team of 37 people but only one is in my same office. I have worked from home for the past 11 years and have always been a high performer. Now I’m being forced back into the office. It takes me 65 minutes to drive to the office with no traffic so I’m wasting more than 2 hours in the car each day. I also have 2 children and now can’t be around for most of their activities.
I used to log into the network at home and start working by 7:30. I would work until about 5:00, sometimes stepping away for around 30 minutes to take one of my kids to daycare, practice, etc. Most nights I would log back in after dinner for an hour or two to follow up on some things. So when I actually add it up I was averaging 10-11 hours per day.
Now, with 2+ hours of pointless commuting time (+ morning prep) it would make it a 12-14 hour day. Sorry but no. Instead, I’m getting into the office by 8:30 and leaving between 4:30-5:00. I refuse to stay one minute past 5:00. In the past, with the flexibility of working from home and without having the wasted commuting time, I didn’t mind putting in several extra hours of work each day. Not any more. I’m suddenly watching the clock like a factory worker and not putting in ONE OUNCE of extra effort or time.
I’m sure I’m not the only one whose outlook has totally changed. Cigna was so stupid and short sighted with this illogical policy. They just ensured that people are now going to do only the bare minimum. What a joke it is to hear Cordani and the rest of the ELT lie to us about how Cigna embraces “vitality.” Hilarious. My life and “vitality” is worse in multiple ways now thanks to Cigna and the company is getting much less of a commitment out of me. Well done!
