Can someone clear this up for me, please?
Is Centene blackballing those laid off to prevent them from going elsewhere? Or is the company blackballed because of the lay offs and low Stars rating and as a result former employees are having a hard time?
Different places give different numbers but for every 20, 80, 100 applications you fill out, you might get one interview then for every ten interviews, one offer. Numbers might be even higher. Bottom line, don't get discouraged. It will take time because millions of other people are applying too. If you're not chosen, not the right place for you.
Read on a different board someone filled out 600 applications before landing a job. Same message of persevere, it will happen.
Don't worry about centene and what they're doing or not doing. And as others have said, think outside healthcare. Apply what skills you used there to other types of positions. You just have to get creative in how you present those skills. If you really feel you can do a specific job even if you don't have direct experience, then sell that. I've never done "XYZ" but i did do "A" which was similar in that I had to do "123." So you may not have that specific experience but you have the capacity to learn it because you were able to do 1,2,3. You just have to figure out what skills you come the closest to matching and sell it. Good luck.
Centene doesn't give one sh-t about you. I don't mean you specifically. I mean everyone they've let go. They're not blacklisting anyone. They cut you out of their Centene lives and they continue forward with looking where to cut next. If you believe you're important enough for them to be wasting time trying to keep you from getting a job, you are mistaken. What exactly do they gain with that? They already have the money they would be spending in employing you.
The more likely thing is a combination of things mentioned in other replies. Tough job market, lack of training of former employees, tarnished company name, etc etc.
What does surprise me is seeing people say they were let go because of the vaccine because we got the same "threat" of get it or else and plenty of people refused that are still currently employed and STILL not vaccinated so why some and not others unless that wasn't the reason at all. At this point, this company is just a joke and why you might be overlooked. NOT because they're trying to keep you from getting another job.

I believe if the experience anyone brings to the table is only that of Centene, that is where the issues begin. The training there is slim to non-existent. That would be a red flag to employers vs that you at some point worked at Centene. And, in 2021 the layoffs early in the year had nothing to do with Covid vaccine compliance. There was no widely available vaccine in early Feb / March of 2021. I believe I was finally able to get one in April and the second in May that year. The required vaccine issues occurred later. After a decade of working for them, I and most of the 3000 initially let go during the pandemic were older and in their eyes making too much. I'm aware of the many layoffs over the years I worked there. Never 3000 at a time previously. Generally about 1000 or less, once a year or every other year. Some years an entire department was let go, normally a small team, but it was always upsetting. If you are going into an interview thinking no offer will be made because of where you worked, that will show during that interview. Stand tall and bring all the confidence you can with you to any interview you have. Someone wrote to apply at hospitals or schools. Understand the pay will not be equal to that from an insurance company. Again, good luck. It may have been three years ago, but it feels like yesterday to me. It worked out for me and many others during early 2021 because we just kept applying until it did. Don't undervalue yourselves.
It is wonderful that it worked out for you in 2021. It's not 2021 anymore. And there were thousands laid off from Centene every year since then. At least in 2021 MN gave everyone notice and what the last date of employment would be if you didn't get the C19 shot. Was it right? - that's debatable and not the point.
Centene did this to themselves but they aren't truly the ones suffering - its the people they employ/employed that are suffering. Their attempt to hide layoffs last Sept in the hopes of side blinding their employees only to be outed by a media leak and then follow-up with absolutely no empathy or compassion has made every employee connected to them look like a bad investment to other companies no matter whether it's true or not.
Go to a different healthplan within Centene. Worked for someone I know that got laid off.
Anyone here still looking for another job after lay off or leaving or fired …. Look into other fields … forget about insurance plans …. Look into hospitals …. Schools anything of service to communities. Unfortunately as soon as they see Centene in the resume it is a downhill battle
I was part of the 3000+ person layoff during early 2021 while the Covid epidemic was in full swing. I am older and was not in a position to retire yet, so was very concerned about landing a comparable job at another company. A little over two months after the layoff I received a very decent offer for a remote position and have been there since. I had worked at several other insurance companies in many different positions, so I know that worked in my favor as far as experience. I never had anyone I interviewed with say negative things about Centene. Make sure your LinkedIn profile tells your story and experiences in an easy to read manner. I know the job market is not great at present within the insurance industry as a whole. Try to network as much as you can. Good luck to all out there looking. It will happen for you.
Been unemployed since October 2023, 800+ applications submitted with very little follow up from the companies I applied to and only interviewed with 5 companies. I can say one recruiter I was speaking to did tell me that being a former Centene employee is a hard sell but he should be able to work me into an interview, the interview never happened.
Considering the fraud and corruption from Centene would you want to hire someone that came from Centene? Even though that employee had no involvement but there is that stigma which is a shame that companies are looking down on former Centene employees.
Also have heard and know for a fact a lot of folks were handed positions at Centene, Project Manager especially at least in NY, and when they move on they bring no knowledge of what they actually are supposed to do and thus companies have little trust in the Centene employees experience and knowledge. One of the interviews I got through HR expressed this to me when they told me I wasn't choose and also they have had bad experiences in the past with former centene employees.
Either way perception is reality. Centene handled themselves so wrong, and thousands of former and CURRENT employees are marketing them negatively. The little man suffers as a result.
I've never seen anything like this! It is sure to stick for a LONG time.
I’ve heard it’s just all over the healthcare insurance industry. Not blackballing, but cuts and staffing issues. Finding jobs in the same industry seems to be difficult for lots of folks I have spoken to inclusive of former employees, recruiters, career coaches, resume writers. Lots of churn in this vertical across the board.
Insider information: Other health insurance companies are still trying to keep the illusion that they are providing a service to their customers. Centene has abandoned that long ago along with keeping up appearances of staying compliant. Healthcare companies want employees who are still under that illusion.
I feel like I'm being blackballed. I was laid off in October, I've interviewed for quite a few different positions, for which I am more than qualified for, and I get the "we will not be moving you forward in the process"
