Thread regarding Alteryx layoffs

The Epic Saga of Pi---l Pearce (RIP)

In the pantheon of failed marketing feats,
Lived Pi---l Pearce, averse to spreadsheets.
In the annals of marketing blunders galore,
he stood tall yet insecure to the core.
CMO he was of an AI and analytics shop,
yet strangely seemed to lack any marketing chops

Assigned a leader of a cloud-bound crew,
Yet clouded judgment was all he knew.
A CMO whose incompetence clearly shone,
Against those who knew more, his insecurity blown.

He led a marketing org, aimed at the cloud,
But his true love was TikTok, #SocialMediaProud.
"Serious users? Pshh, what a bore!
Let's go viral, make our metrics soar!"
Hashtags and memes, obsessing over the mentions
While untouched leads sat there begging for attention.

Demand creation? A concept lost.
Pearce ignored it, at a heavy cost.
Campaigns flopped, no targets met,
A storm of chaos, a firm beset.
“BrandGen is the answer!” Pearce proclaimed,
While the actual metrics around him went down in flames.

An analytics org, sharp and keen?
But Pearce, oh Pearce, shunned the data scene.
“The data’s wrong!” he’d callously claim,
While anyone else in his place would be utterly ashamed

“Maveryx o’ Maveryx!” his battle cry,
Launched absurd events you shouldn’t even if high
Formula 1? Soccer? A sponsoring spree
"brand is where its at!” he’d decree with glee.
Budgets blown on Mclaren soirees,
Yet no revenue in sight, just mounting fees.

Cloud pipeline was the urgent need
But it wasn’t a priory Pearce would heed
Pay attention dude, cloud IS the plan
Nope, not for pi---l whose head was in la la land
“Why look to clouds when you can be a star?”
Yet his stars were dim, and the cloud afar.

Demand generation was not his style,
He’d rather throw a party, mile after mile.
Products needed buyers, a clear strategy,
Pearce’s approach: swag for all for free.

His boss, prez Paula, oblivious in her role,
Watched the disaster spiral out of control.
Despite his flops, his rampant spree,
She clapped along, happily let it all be.
Each blunder met with a nod and a smile,
Her thumbs up given, endorsing the vile.

The climax came on a splashy Inspire night,
The Maveryx circus on display, no end in sight.
Investors watched in horror, the board in dismay,
As Paula’s praise led them further astray.
Yet Paula beamed, proud as could be,
"A fantastic job, Keith! You're a star to me!"

The final blow, this splashy Inspire fest,
Held against a backdrop of mass layoffs at Insight’s behest.
The new investors livid, board members shook their heads,
Not an ounce of competence on display, not a shred
Where are the adults, they loudly exclaimed?
Little did they realize, our execs have no shame
Their decision to acquire Alteryx, now filling them with dread
Forced Paula to finally awaken from the dead.

When the dust finally settled, the deal done,
Pearce thought to himself, the party’s just begun
Little did he know, little did he see
that he’d be whacked imminently, on the board's decree,
He pleaded with Paula “you said I was great, couldn’t everyone else see?”
She told him her hands were tied, from the C-suite he was free.
Sadly it was the investors who had to finally do
What our rookie execs should have done long ago but didn’t have the courage to

Now whispered in meetings, with a chuckle or groan,
The tale of Pi---l, widely bemoaned
Let marketers learn from this ironic plight,
Focus on data, and get your strategy right!
tales are still told in whispers light,
of Pearce’s saga, a marketer’s blight.
So let us laugh at this odd man's fate,
Who set aside the facts preferring to speculate.

When they did the whole maveryx thing I knew the place wasn’t for me. The internal fight against the cloud - a real thing for the last 5-6 years in data , just proved to me this company was full of dead weight people across all orgs. Analytics for all! Unless your data is in Snowflake Databricks BQ (you get the point) the evangelists for the company were ex Alteryx desktop bigots , who would put a real cdo to sleep with the pedestrian Analytics for All message. Where will Alan J , Heather H and Steve B end up? What a circus

Bravo sir/ma'am - this post had to have taken some serious and legit work to compile. By far the best post I've seen here since 'Ode to Alteryx' and a 10/10 from me

However, as hysterical, ingenious and hard hitting it is, deep down it makes me angry. Incredibly angry

Why?

Because of the blatant, obvious there for everyone to see incompetence that was allowed to persist for so long.

Anyone who's been here for a bit and interacted with Pearce two years ago knew he was an incompetent mishire from the get go. Analytics for all was uninspiring, the aacp launch was piddling, maveryx was cringeworthy and this recent AI platform branding reeks of pathetic and me too. The reason being, it's not just the lazy wannabe vibes of each of these sorry attempts, it's the inauthentic aura his presence adds to whatever he touches or associates himself with

Forget AI, this is a guy from whom data and analytics are anathema. I've never seen him reference data as evidence for any decision, big or small. I bet he's never built a pivot table in his life and doesn't know what a vlookup is let alone the difference between a regular workflow and a macro or analytic app. These are all mindless buzzwords in his book that he gets to throw around for fun in just another day job. Yet, we entrusted him to come up with our brand message on analytics and more recently on genAI? fu--ing seriously? What other modern Silicon Valley tech company would allow a man with his skills, domain experience and analytics competence to do that ?

Though never broadly recognized, the Alteryx brand has always been about the slight misfits that were smart, data driven and creative self-starters that got serious sh-t done without taking themselves too seriously. Users have mostly been of the type that rarely complain and instead take pride in rolling up their sleeves, taking matters into their own hands, cutting through the BS and getting to the truth. That's literally the exact opposite of everything this man represents. He is the epitome of fluff, whining, excuses and obfuscation. It's like seeing Ronald McDonald as the mascot for a hipster vegan brand. Very dissonant.

Honestly the person who deserves the real blame and anger directed to them is Paula (and potentially Suresh who fully endorsed and supported these decisions). Just like with Barb, Gary and Dorsey (her rockstar hires who destroyed the Channel, Asia and Americas businesses respectively), not only did she pick a horrible marketing leader, she stuck with him for two years after he made it crystal clear on day 1 he wasn't a fit. Mark made many awful mistakes but Paula was probably his biggest. We are only starting to see the scale of the damage she has wrought on Alteryx that will need to be unwound.
