The untruthful phrase being regurgitated through the lips of many managers is that Performance Matters. The truth is that performance doesn't matter at Truist and leadership has made this crystal clear over the years. They use this phrase as a tool to shame others not meeting unrealistic goals while also using fear to discipline those who aren't doing as they are told. It's a culture of do what you're told or else. If you do everything right and meet the unrealistic goals consistently for years, you surely will not be promoted, receive raises that are larger than others or be recognized or rewarded. You'll only have no heat for the time being. This isn't a culture of performance matters but a culture of do what you're told or else.
Myself and other peers who have top percentile performance at Truist are all starting to notice this. We all continue to wonder why we are always lied to every year that we will be promoted or receive a good raise. We all wonder why we don't receive the recognition or rewards that we deserve. The leadership at Truist is excellent at fostering a culture of mediocrity because they make it crystal clear to top performers that they don't want to see the performance repeated by how they treat those who meet the expectations in a highly toxic and dysfunctional environment.
Saying performance matters is catchy but let's get real, you're not going to be treated well for performing stellar. They only use this phrase as a free pass to coach people into oblivion and discipline the 90% who are "off track".
They talk about a home run year but I think teammates need to run home this year and reevaluate our employment options. A year to elevate is clear, it's one to continue to elevate managers and you'll be left behind as always.
Your sanity isn't worth it. You don't need to meet "their expectations". Frankly they don't care that's why they will not take care of you when you perform stellar. It's all a show to shame and use fear to 90% of the teammates.
What's your thoughts on a culture of mediocrity and performance not mattering?
