Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Write Up/PIP Without Warning

I was put on a performance improvement plan without warning. There’s now a written disciplinary action in Workday detailing I could be fired without warning for 12 months after the performance plan is complete. Is this an attrition move? I don’t feel this punishment is warranted and I haven’t heard of this happening with others. Has anyone else recently had this experience?

Scrutinize what you must accomplish in order to not get fired which should be clearly listed in the PIP. Take that document and meet with your manager once a week. Go through the list of what you’re required to do, make sure you understand everything clearly. Every week you talk with your manager about progress, escalate challenges for his/her help, and email a meeting recap about all agreements. They are creating a paper trail to get rid of you. You create a paper trail to keep your job. Do not empower your manager to take your paycheck and benefits from you and your family! If your manager is not playing nicely then reach out to employee relations on iris and they may have a Be Heard program to mediate conflicts with your manager. Good luck.

Managers must have a chain of evidence of corrective action (email and/or conversations) prior to PIP implementation. If you haven't been spoken to about whatever action is the cause of the PIP, create a case with Employee Relations about it. They may be off-shore, but on-shore HR is not there to help employees.

Yep, this happened to me last year. Put on a PIP with no warning and no conversation from a manager I worked for only 3 months. I put in an ER case and won. It was rolled back to a verbal still unwarranted. Then after another 30 days put me on PIP again for no reason. Also gave me no bonus or raise even though I had good reviews from other managers in 2022. I fought both of those again and I did get half my bonus. I left Cigna in May of 2023 and have a great job with great leaders. When I left I sent an email to his boss, his bosses boss and the hrbp but nothing came of it. I saw he was promoted to Director this year after having 3 ER cases against him last year by me and another by another coworker. Cigna doesn’t care. That company went down hill in 5 years. If I were you, I would fight it

Unlikely attrition related. PIPs are not taken or handed out lightly. Your manager has been working with HR on this, and got the green light for a reason. Look internally for why this may have happened, if you legitimately think there is no merit to it, discuss with HR, otherwise you can take some steps to improve, work with your manager etc., but I have to agree, the smart move is to start looking for another job with a new company while you are in this 12 month period.

I've never seen someone come back from a PIP. Find another job.

You can contest for he PIP if you think it’s unfair.

If you are not going into office 3 times a day, you will get put on PIP

Do you mean you had no idea it was coming at all, has your manager engaged in conversations discussing any issues or need for improvement? You mentioned you don't think it is warranted, but not sure if you mean you are aware there are some issues and think this is an over reaction or are you saying you don't know of any reason at all why they went this route? The PIP essentially is your warning to improve and a clear sign people are not happy with your performance or some other event like coz+1si7gNcQ posted initially.

This is too vague for us to really help. What is the stated reason for the PIP? what did your manager say about why you are on one? I've only heard of people being placed on PIPs for bad violations of their duties

I’ve heard of this happening, but it was for a very good reason. The person put on PIP had altered documentation to make it look like something happened that didn’t. But generally if you get out on a PIP your time is running out because they want you gone and need documentation so they can fire you.
