Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Any remote workers heard the news today?

There are couple I know of that their remote work exceptions are not approved anymore so they need to make a choice between rto, starting in Sep and leaving the corp. Even some of them have a remote work clause in their job offer letter, it happened.

I disagree that this was expected. I have been working remotely for the last six years with no hint that it would go away until we had to reapply for exemptions. Two years ago I was approved to work remotely in another state to help out my aging in-laws. Now remote is off the table and so is moving back. Had I know this two years ago I would have made a much different decision.

They aren’t paying for relocation.

This is happening everywhere. I left my job which was remote for 9 years and in my offer letter as 100% remote. It's just a way for companies to increase attrition and not have to pay severance. I worked in an office for 40 years. Was it easy? I wouldn't say that. There are people that don't want to commute, to spend 2-3 hours on the road each day. In my case, there were no people on my team locally anyway so why go into an office just to attend meetings online. There really are people that produce higher quality and quantity work remotely.

50% in office is reasonable compared to the industry. Not letting us pick which days we come in is crazy, especially when they kept preaching flexibility that turned into a total lie.

Does any one know what the denial letter says exactly, when you were hired as a remote employee and live in a different state?

Going from a zero hour commute to 2 1/2 hours a day is a significant change. They'll lose those who will look for something closer to their homes. I will only do it until I find something closer to home or remote. What a waste for everyone. I wish us all luck!

Certainly seems like bait and switch to give a remote offer and then rescind it. These poor people could have accepted a different offer with another company.

Give how much they have to pay SVPs and above they need to try somewhere… it’s either remote staff or outsource more to India and China. The Johnson family will never accept anything other than their 20% cut. We exist to make them money…

That’s the same as what I have heard from teammates who were hired fully remote but had to request an exception.

Yes. This was kinda expected imho… going to the office shouldn’t be that hard.

If you’re in a place where there are no centers, I can see them providing leeway, or at least paying for relocation.

There’s not many fully-remote jobs out there. Good luck to you if you find one and that’s what you’re about!

2 weeks in the office is easy.
