Two things that drove Intel to a downward spiral

  1. ACT - Richard Taylor's brainchild and shock it created in the organisation, not to speak of the talent drain that it resulted in.
  2. Tinkering with time tested Focal process to pander to the DEI crowd and giving under performers a free pass.

You could add a third item to the list - hiring a former executive to be CEO. The company was actually doing quite well on the way to recovery but that recovery headed south within a few months of his arrival. Revenue is now down well over a third and falling, products are stale, and his grand plan is eating cash at a rate never seen before with no end in sight. The competition is loving this.

My org lost some incredibly talented people during ACT2016 for reasons we never figured out. It was definitely a morale ki-ler.

This what Intel does though. Kick their most gifted and highly qualified employees to the curb only to replace them with people of the opposite caliber.

Those gifted people had no trouble getting jobs at competing companies.

ACT2016 was probably the worst thing happened in Intel in the past 10 years. Completely de-moralized the employees, and the company never recovered.

Messing with meritocracy works for soft sciences and ‘universities’ where there are zero stakes.

With engineering and physics, You’re either right or wrong regardless of your feelings or race or s-xual orientation. The universe doesn’t care. Just be right. Promoting and hiring people that are wrong is a path to failure.
