Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Being RIFed is TRAUMATIC

Serious question:
Why won’t they just give you the severance money you’re eligible for based on your years of service minus the taxes you owe and leave you alone since they want to be done with you so bad???
Instead they’re making you endure the indignity of filing for unemployment as a condition of severance under the guise of calling it “supplemental pay” instead of “severance” to keep from having to pay you a full paycheck. If you get a job no matter the pay you’ll lose your supplemental pay. Every week you have to file for unemployment benefits. In addition to that every week you have to contact Elevance to let them know you’re still unemployed. Any failure to do either one of these things and you won’t get paid.
It was already super traumatic to be RIFed. Having to keep attesting to the department of labor and Elevance is just like picking at the wound. It’s a constant reminder that your a** is still unemployed thanks to corporate greed. You can’t heal from what you’re going through.

And please don’t come for me saying just be thankful you’re getting paid, you shouldn’t complain etc. Because I worked my a-s off for damn near 3 decades only to be cast aside like flaming hot garbage. The least they could do is give me what I more than earned and let me walk away with my dignity.

I wonder how unemployment and supplemental pay would work for those of us who retired from the military before joining Anthem/Wellpoint/Elevance Health/Carelon?

Elevance is really living up to its new mission to elevate and advance...yup... elevate the pay of the staff vps and above while advancing the need for mental health care of the associates that care about our customers, company and staying true and loyal to our guiding principles.

I knew a former co-worker that was doing gig work (Uber/Lyft) at the time he got RIF'd and it definitely impacted his severance package.

I don't understand the reported strong job numbers.

These never ending rifs have serious consequences for employees mental health, motivation, moral, collaboration and loyalty. The Elevance culture is toxic, demoralizing and absolute chaos with reorg after reorg, plus endless supply of incompetent “leadership”.

@cxz+1sUP5lot I asked the same exact thing because I had signed up to do Door Dash right before I was RIFed to bring in extra money to go on vacation. I was told that any income must be reported to unemployment and Elevance. Even gig work. Which is crazy. I miss the days where they gave you your money and left you alone. Now they want to squeeze every last penny out of you before putting you out to pasture.

So how does this work if you’ve already had a second job throughout employment? A small part time waitressing gig is only “fun money” and not anything compared to my salary

The short answer is: It costs less.
If they can find a way to RIP YOU OFF, that's exactly what they will do.

Supplemental payout is set up that way because the company cares much more about profits than it has ever cared about the employees that keep the place running. They are hoping people sc--w up and the company can keep the rest of the money. And don't fool yourself into thinking HR is here for the employees. HR exists to protect the company and management from being sued. If the company truly cared about its long-term employees, they would have continued payments into the Retirement Medical Savings Accounts (RMSAs) which was discontinued in 2013. It wasn't a lot at $500 a year, but at least it was something employees could use at retirement to cover health insurance until Medicare kicks in.
