Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Home offices vs office nearby

Get ready for movement on home offices enforcement. Review policy. Also many will be required to work in the office environment nearest you. Includes management. Everyone figure out where your nearest office is located and discuss with your manager.

Nah- I was WFH the first time I worked for UHG (2011(, and everytime they have bought up my company since... as long as you meet metrics, they are very WFH oriented.

If true, then RIF me. I’ve been WFH for 19 years with this company. Yes they pay for internet too.

Exactly. It's stupid. We would be going into the office, just to connect with others virtually, across the country and with off-shore. Makes no sense. There are like 15 Optum "locations" near my area, but they're all like urgent care centers lmao. These aren't set up for office people, plus, doubt the IT infrastructure in these places is set up to connect in to the proper network for most remotees - would have to vpn in from there anyway.

As fast I know none of us Remote workers get our internet paid for? I could see maybe being stricter about the locked door policy and such sure but forcing everyone back? What would be the purpose as most teams are scattered across the US so it couldn't be for team building. Not one person on my team lives in the same state.

What's with the "need"? Do we need to create more pollution? Do we need to add to the rush hour congestion misery for the people in jobs who actually need to work on location? Do we need to spend more money on gas, food, dry cleaning, and other expenses related to commuting? Do we need to decrease productivity by being distracted with workplace shenanigans, constant background noises, and gossip talk? Do people need more reasons to feel disgruntled?

All WFH folks need to get back into the office. It’s about time!
With that being said UHG is big on remote work… we shall see. Stay tune….

It’s true. If you are within 50 miles, you will be forced into the office. Those remote will be laid off

Someone eluded to getting internet paid for. I was forced to WFH following COVID and my office shutdown. I have never been compensated for my internet. If some are my reply is WTF!

I doubt this. I was in the office pre covid. That building is now empty and for sale. There are no other offices to go to in my state. Unless they decide to open a new one which I don't see happening. Opening an office from scratch is expensive.

Um there isn't an office for my business segment anywhere nearby. There is a teeny tiny place I think to get supplies about 90 mon away. My pillar doesn't even have an HQ that I know of? So I cannot see this happening.

This is very true! They did this back in 2016 as well. You must be within 50 miles of an office or will be rif’ed

Our department got the email about home office security and if unable to work to report to a nearby office. A reliable source did say this is in discussion about having offices reopen .I will drive if need be but it takes 90 min to closest office. Hoping they just mean management as that was like it was years ago.

I have a random office from my house 5 minutes away. That’s the ONLY way I’d be willing to go back on site is to that site only with a hybrid schedule if forced. And if they won’t even allow that then I’m gonna dip the freak out. Cuz there’s nothing left here benefits wise that is decent except for the 401K contributions. And the likelihood of lasting 20+ years here is slim given the track record of the business.

Then there is absolutely no reason to stay...

I doubt that. Even if true, wouldn't apply to everybody. WFH saves them money on real estate, overhead, encourages people to work more and odd hours when they otherwise wouldn't, etc. If people were forced to commute and be drained from road raging for many hours daily, they probably would do f*ck-all the entire day, put in their minimum 8 hours, then bolt. Kinda like George Costanza with his Penske files. Any emergencies or extra work that needs to be done, would need to wait until the next day or Monday. And the company wouldn't implement this to promote workforce attrition; they have no qualms laying people off anyway.

Have not darkened the doorway since 2016 so this is a load of cr-p. When I was in office my role never interacted with anyone in the local office anyway.

Stop with this fake cr-p. I’ve worked here 20 years. They have always given the option to telecommute unless you are upper management. It’s much more cost effective for the company and most of their buildings they started selling and downsizing way before Covid. At least put stuff on here that’s legit. You are just trying to freak people out.

UHG has offices all over the country, you might be assigned to a building that’s mainly a call center as an example or a local health plan location. Depending on where you live, it could be a long commute and you may be the only person from your entire business segment in that entire office.

Outside of connecting directly to the company LAN, not sure there would be any benefit in a situation like that.
Would be more likely that employees would be required to report to specific offices even if that meant relocation,
I can say this would not be the first time it has happened.

Where are offices? Other than MN?

This is actually already happening so it is true. Everyone overseas works in a main office thus not getting internet paid for, etc. It's more secure and saves the company money. It's all due to the security break. Makes sense to have less remote and monitor everyone more closely in the office setting. From a reliable source It's already started!

I don’t believe this. Everyone knows UHG/Optum is all about wfh to save money. Less buildings to buy to house everyone.
