Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Cigna is hiring in India instead of the US

Hey, Cigna has a hiring freeze in the US but is hiring employees in India. If you want a job as an employee (not a contractor) with Cigna move to India. India employees get free lunch daily and some employees get free transportation home. The India employee benefits are better - 12 India holidays vs 7 US holidays, 18 vacation days + 12 sick days (30 days off total) for India employees but the US employees get 21 total sick & vacation together because in the US we have to use our vacation time when we are sick.

Can confirm hiring freeze in US for tech jobs, at least in some departments.

Offshore work IMO works best as a compliment not a replacement to US workers. This has been attempted before, it doesn't work well. Not to mention the irony / hypocrisy of forced RTO under the guise of collaboration when they are firing so many of our more accessible team members in favor of reduced cost labor. Making true collaboration nearly impossible due to time zones.

Last week we laid off all contractors on our IT development team. They are to be replaced by India Hyderabad employees. This will not save Cigna any money because we will slow down big time during the months it will take to do knowledge transfer and get them up to speed. Also their working hours end at 9am EST which leaves little time for collaboration and we are expecting lots of slow down when they have questions on requirements or need to demo something. Cigna is saving a penny today to pay an extra dollar tomorrow. This strategy has been tried before and failed across the industry. But you know short term profits are more important than having a functional business in 2 years.

There is no hiring freeze in the US. And for the record, I inquired about applying to a job in the UK - willing to move there - and I was told that if I wasn’t already in a role with “global mobility” that I wouldn’t qualify. Various countries have laws around employers who move US workers to other countries because it takes away a job from a local citizen. But go ahead, quit, move, reapply and let us know how it works.

“They’re posting jobs daily on LinkedIn”

LinkedIn is mostly ghost jobs. I’ve been working on getting out of this he-l hole and realized after a little while that almost none of the companies posting on LinkedIn are hiring. There is a lot of info of other people having the same experience out there. I’ve been getting interviews from places I’ve applied to directly or on other smaller job sites.

Don’t know where you get there is a hiring freeze. They’re posting jobs daily on LinkedIn.
So glad to be away from Cigna after 18+ years, it’s like a weight lifted after working for someone who knew nothing about what I did or the effort it took to deliver the work.
Wishing those remaining and miserable the very best.

Lol with the benefits comparison.. you won't get US salary ranges in Hyderabad, it'll be like 25% or less v onshore.

I think, and not that most Cigna employees are this, that if you are a younger 21–35-year-old single person who is willing to make that jump to work for Cigna in another country, it can't hurt to ask for them to try and transfer you (though we all know that isn't practical for most people and that this place has become even worse). Both India and Ireland have significantly better benefits than the US across the board, and while the US isn't the worst int he world on this (Japan and South Korea) it is still miserable, especially for entry-level. I also wonder if Cigna as a culture in those countries is any different than here in the US (If the UK/Europe office people can speak up if they so desire) because I strongly suspect it is.

"Depends on your band and tenure. "
I think the poster is talking about when any employee first starts working for Cigna as lower than a senior director.
They also didn't share that India employees also get 12 days of "casual leave"/yr, giving India employees a total of 42 days of leave + 12 holidays = 54 days off total/yr. US employees get 18 or 23 vacation + 8 holidays = 26 or 31 days off total. That's a 4-5 week difference in time off.

Good thing they have such a strong grasp of American Health Insurance, what could go wrong with this decision?

Cigna is in the business of providing private health insurance to employers groups who provides health benefits to employees in the US. If all other US companies takes the lead from Cigna and start to offshore... They won't have a business anymore . Corporate greed is taking over the US. Every company is raising prices and trying paying their workers less. People have to work two or more jobs to stay afloat.
