Summary: L3Harris has conducted another round of layoffs affecting employees nationwide, including workers at the company's plant in Greenville. This action is part of the company's LHX NeXT initiative, which aims to achieve over $1 billion in cost savings over the next three years. The company describes these layoffs as necessary to "streamline operations" and "right-size" the workforce. Despite the provided rationale, specific details about the number of employees laid off at the Greenville location, the affected departments, or support measures such as continued benefits or job placement were not disclosed. This series of layoffs continues the integration process initiated by the 2019 merger of L3 Technologies and Harris Corp. The layoffs are of particular concern in Greenville, where L3Harris is the largest employer, accounting for nearly 34% of the city’s working population.

In response to questions submitted by the Herald-Banner, L3Harris’ director of corporate media relations Sara Banda replied with the same statement that has been shared with many other news organizations across the country – saying the staff cuts were designed to “streamline [the company’s] operations” and are part of a company initiative called LHX NeXT, for which the goal is to save more than $1 billion over the next three years.
“L3Harris continues to focus on operational performance and delivering on our LHX NeXt commitments, including $1 billion in gross cost savings over the next three years,” the statement read.
“With this in mind, and having identified a series of opportunities to streamline our operations, we have made the difficult decision to right-size our workforce.”
While L3Harris gave its reasons for the reduction in its staff, questions about how many people were laid off at the Greenville plant, what positions or departments they were in, and if any temporary “continuations of benefits” or “job placement support” (as L3Harris has offered in at least some past layoffs) were offered this time around were not answered.
L3Harris’ streamlining efforts, including the layoffs, are a continuation of the integration process that began when L3 Technologies and Florida-based Harris Corp. merged in 2019.
Regardless of the reasons, layoffs at L3Harris are particularly worrisome in Greenville because it’s the city’s biggest employer.
As of Greenville’s 2022-2023 comprehensive financial report, L3Harris was the employer of about 6,500 people, which was almost 34% of the city’s working population.
