Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

I’m continually amazed the staff have not yet formed a union.

"People who have worked under a union realize they’re a waste of $."

Not a single person I've ever met that's been in a union (nurses, grocery workers, university staff, carpenters, and plumbers) feels this way. They all see the huge value in unionizing. Bet the company is planting some sc-m union busters in here!

I have worked in both ineffective and effective unions. I am not a huge fan of unions, but when faced with massive corporations playing too many games with workers, a union is necessary if only to shake things up.

Also, Henry Ford is credited with the 40 hour work week because he wanted to retain top talent for boring jobs. Another factor was the fact that women entered the workplace, negating the need for 12 hour days.

People who have never worked under a union romanticize them.

People who have worked under a union realize they’re a waste of $.

Wow, this post and the majority of other posts on this “layoff” site complain about incompetent Cigna management, Human Resources and the numerous failures of Cigna culture. What benefit is there to add union corruption and incompetence as an oppressive force further impacting employees?

I wish everyone would read "You Deserve A tech union" by Ethan Marcotte.

People like to complain about union dues, but after forming a union, you almost always negotiate a pay raise that is significantly more than your union dues. So you still end up with more money in your pocket.

What unions really are, is Democracy.

Right now, the workplace is a dictatorship. Or maybe an oligarchy. The wealthiest shareholders elect a board who hires a CEO who's word is law. (You might also own shares, but not enough to affect the election. Even if if all the employees below C-level voted together.)

But a union is real democracy, where each person gets one vote.

And it can have some of the same problems that other democracies have. But it's still better than a dictatorship.

Now, the. union itself is democratic, but it still has to negotiate, it's not suddenly in charge. It just has a lot more leverage to negotiate than you do alone.

As much as a union would help reduce layoffs, end back to office, and reduce migrating our jobs offshore, Cigna (like every other mega corporation) would spend 100 million dollars to quash a union, even if the cost of a union was only 5 million in concessions. They will do anything to avoid unions…like pay for marketing to brainwash people into thinking all unions are good for us docking a paycheck.

And to the d-mb commenters, the only reason you have a weekend, lunch breaks, guaranteed paychecks and 40 hour weeks is because unions organized, went on strike, and bargained for things you take for granted. Maybe you need a week in the mines in 1911 working 16 hours a day for 6 days a week with no breaks.

What do you think a union is going to do besides take part of your paycheck for union dues?
