Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

stack rankings out of control

Daily basis everyone is finding out that people are mysteriously gone. A senior director was told they have to PIP and fire employees. They said those employees are excellent workers and their manager told them to find any reason to fire them. That Sr Director was put on a PIP and had to leave the company.

Thank you to the above Director for stating what we know happens at C1. It's so obvious. I'm on a below strong and so is my manager. However they keep their job by getting rid of me. Sick stuff. Ethics. Morales. Character and Diginity. Not prerequisites for C1.

I've been a director at C1 for 2 years. During 2023 mid-year PM, I was forced to put one of my employees in 'below strong,' but managed to get him off with an easy unofficial coaching plan that was not even logged in Workday. Then, at year-end, I got reprimanded by the leadership for not readily agreeing with team 'consensus' and fighting for my employees. Two calibration sessions had to be repeated, and my tech lead, who was already agreed to be in 'strong,' was pushed to 'below strong.' This change came from my skip-level VP, who was advised by my Senior Director manager. Nothing could have changed their opinion at that point. Again, I managed to get my tech lead off on a coaching plan with all 'results' achievements being 'met expectations' and only three competencies being 'below strong' – all around leadership and 'coming up with new opportunities' – that was the only complaint/feedback I heard during the calibrations. When this coaching plan was reviewed by my Senior Director (the one that threw my tech lead under the buss), he suggested I set results as well as 'not met expectations,' but I refused.

Easy to guess the next thing – I myself received 'below strong', an unrealistic PIP, and 'failed to meet expectations' on all our results that, mind you, were delivered on time and fully, and one of them even made us Tech Award finalists. I opted out of PIP, got my severance, and am happy to be out of this swamp, even in light of the fact that I still did not find a new job. And to make things worse, I received a letter requesting the return of a supposedly overpaid bonus that was part of the severance.

Applause to those who showed integrity. Most often you see is “I do whatever my manager told me to do, backstab another coworker? No a problem. “

Is the senior director who showed integrity TM by any chance. I found her very knowledgeable during my short stay there.

Wish I knew who that Senior Director is. I'd love to follow him/her on his/her next job.
It's rare to have managers you can trust.

Agree with 1rTZqqE4-same thing happened to me. I am relieved to be out of that stress. Almost ruined my mental health.

The stack rankings are just an easy way for the company to adjust their headcount to increase profits. They will hire like crazy when they want and then ratchet the numbers for the stack when they want to slash and burn headcount. Listening to these folks tell you how much they value you is a mistake. They may value your contributions to their own bank accounts when times are good, but as you see, when they want, they have built in a nifty escape clause to flush, rinse and repeat. This helps them avoid lawsuits. I can assure you crying Rich only cares about his billions, not the employees.

It's a common story. If you don't act like sheep and follow your seniors blindly you're career will be ruined.

I was asked to put one of my reports on PIP, I didn't listen and defended him and he got to keep his job for one more cycle. I was attacked after that and left soon.

I would do the same again and not regret it.
If enough people showed integrity things could change - but that will never happen at C1. Too many sheep.

If you rescue me and I get out of here will the bad people try to hurt me?
