This company hates unions. Well who doesn’t. The non union guys are always so interested on what the Union gets at contract time. They threaten about starting up a union at which point they target who deserves a bump in pay and gives it to them to quiet down the chatter. Windstream doesn’t seem to care about separating these two groups. They often have the non union guys working in union shop areas to cover heavy work loads and also mix them up at training sites. So basically everyone knows the pay scales and benefits. The common denominator is both sides have terrible health insurance. Pay scales and other benefits are mirrored. The union guys definitely have more job security which is key on a company that layoffs as much as Windstream.

Old technique to preserve their own skin here is how it goes. Someone new takes over department and then suddenly jobs and promotion opportunities are centered around the new director or VPs area of residency. Next try to get others to train the 'newcomers' that are sidling up to the department heads (do so at own risk). Next lay off those outside of the geographic area where new department head lives to solidify new location for your department into that geographic area.
Additional techniques include steering bids and other opportunities to outside contractors while taking payola under the table - seen it many times and the dance never changes. However, I do wonder why the corporate heads let it go on since it only provides negative results for the company as a whole.

It's interesting. Union ILEC techs have a contract up for renewal, and they just rejected the first offer as Windstream only wanted a 2 year contract.

Reading into this, with Sunu at the helm, sounds like the union says 2 years is not an offer of stability.

Non-union techs working in union areas is pretty much a non-starter. Not sure how this will play out.

The move was made to let CLEC techs come in so they can get rid of ILEC techs down the road. Not many CLEC people to layoff so they have to start focusing on thinning out ILEC.

It's not a rumor. I don't Joe everything but JS picked up more territory including some ILEC and CLEC areas. Some local managers locked up more territory as well.
