Thread regarding USAA layoffs

What’s USAA’s reputation like externally? Especially for the job search?

Found out recently that we fell from F100 to F200, and we’ll probably go down to F300. I’ve had a couple of recruiters mention that there have been LinkedIn posts from senior leadership in other corporations about how bad the company is doing and the CEO pay increase.

I’m finding it hard to be taken seriously for apps; did you have the same experience?

I get interviews primarily from other ins companies because they want to know what's going on at USAA not because they are looking to hire. Which is totally fu---d up.

I started a few weeks ago at one of the best companies in the country to work for. The hiring manager wanted to interview me because I was with USAA at the time, and she had worked there before. Turns out, many of the business people on my scrum team jumped off the USAA ship last year and are now employees of my company.

The statements about USAA experience being worthless (most definitely in Bank) are completely spot on, from my point of view. It’s the worst place I’ve ever worked. Twice. Do yourself a favor and make tireless efforts to GTFO!

I went to Chase and they had no idea nor interest in what USAA was.

For the other tech folks out there, IMO you'll get bites from FF500 - don't get discouraged. After all we're well trained at navigating red tape and giving updates..!

Harder is to apply to the more technological companies. That said, there are ex USAA everywhere, so keep working at it

I've had several recruiters and companies just sigh and say "sad they aren't what they used to be huh?" One company told me "We used to drive ourselves crazy trying so hard to figure out how your customer services ratings and retention were continuously so high. Turns out all we had to do was wait a few years and sure enough, they fell from grace". They can't believe that they are laying off at all, especially not loyal tenured employees.

In LinkedIn, search for the top companies including the Mag 7 and under each company's people, search for USAA and you'll see that the ex-USAA folks are pretty much everywhere. If they can do it, we can do it too. Remember what our founding trailblazing fathers taught us, how great we were. I look around this company and I still see a bunch of talented people who doesn't know their worth.

One ex-USAA team lead I worked with (who was professional and helpful at work) got an AWS certification. Upon completion, he had a job offer.

But you also have to play to your strengths. If you have zero AWS work experience and go for that certification, it will be more difficult to understand the material and harder to retain.

It also depends on your areas of interest. Do a little soul searching to know where you should position yourself.

Best of luck!

Unless you completely sank usaa on your own, you have nothing to worry about. You are interviewing, not usaa…

No, not really. I am in ECIO and started to "test" the waters right after we all got our fat bonuses. Just a few days after I submitted, I got quite a number of positive responses from F100 companies. I am excited, my skills are pretty much aligned with what they are looking for. Whether I get an offer remains to be seen.

its not just tech I left a large FI with multiple years of experience to goto USAA when they were promising wfh gigs, I felt like I lost not only brain cells working there but valuable training and experience my peers were gaining elsewhere. I eventually left and alot of hiring managers took my experience at USAA as a joke. After a few interviews I was strongly considering taking them off my resume but didn't want to explain a work gap. Working there definately set me back 5-10 years professionally.

@ikb+1rPiQQTk, oh goodness! Which certifications would you say to do? Which companies? I work in AWS and am looking to pivot into AWS or another technical area

Technology recruiters are now aware of how badly USAA is doing, the work slowdown (which was never that great since USAA is slow adapting to change), and the very poor on-the-job work experience. I tried to "sell" the AWS experience I acquired at USAA but other companies are solidly more advanced and consider what USAA is doing to be like a kid playing with tinker toys.

I would advise anyone working in tech at USAA to supplement their on-the-job experience with certifications/coursework. And, of course, to get out of there ASAP as it will negatively impact your career the longer you stay.
