I recently spotted a role that suits me better and I'd like to give it a go, but I'm worried that switching groups right now could leave me in a more vulnerable position regarding layoffs. Am I overthinking this? Has anybody else made a lateral move relatively recently? How did it go?

There are no guarantees here. A long time ago I moved departments for a promotion only to be caught in a RIF several months later. In the end it worked out because I found another internal position, and i've been moved around over the years. There was no way to predict being caught in a RIF when I moved. So apply for the position, interview for it. You won't know if you'll get it, unless you try.
I don’t think it matters. If you like job, take it and gain new experience and exposure.
At least in commercial ,front line managers have had zero input into who was riffed, director level and above handled that . Hr informed us exactly 1/2 hr before hr forced us tell folks.. reading from the most Cold blooded script you’ve ever heard. We could not deviate or even say a human I’m sorry… And hr was there to police us .
Don't expect a decent AIP. If you switch groups, your AIP will not be as good. It does not matter how well you performed on your last team. You will get the least of money since you were not on your current team the whole year. However, If the grass is greener which I doubt it, then go for it.
All you should care about is if your manager/directors are good/nice
The risk is whether your new management will have greater or lesser loyalty to you compared to your current management. I was reorganized into a new unit (involuntarily) which I believe made me vulnerable to being laid off last month, unfortunately. My new manager wasn't that excited to be getting my unit so wasn't going use any political capital to protect us.
No one is save at Elevance.
No one is in an accurate position to give you an accurate answer. You are overthinking but I would also.
Go for it and good luck let us know how that works out for you
You will always be worried about layoffs even in your current role. It never hurts to see what else there is, and applying doesn’t mean you’ve got the job. Also, I believe there has been a hiring freeze.
