I'm thinking about joining IT. Is this a good idea?

IT is the hardest hit by RIFs yearly. If you want a short term job to pick up new skills, then go for it. If you're looking for something for longer than a year.... don't.

Someone in my family interviewed at my encouragement for a middle management director it position. The interview was a disaster…even our technology failed ..kept crashing. He basically said he pulled himself out of the running he was so unimpressed with the interview and the interviewers. He ended up with an offer making 50-60k more than what we were going to pay.

If you have other options I'd say do a hard pass on this place.

If you don't have other options and need a paycheck by all means take it but have a plan to learn marketable skills during work time and drag your behind whenever you can get away with it.

Over the years I've seen the folks with the most success have mastered the skill of "appearing" to do good work vs actually doing said work. For starters, ignore any tasks from people without titles and jump all over anything with management visibility. Pursue career advancement, power, and prestige outside of your work performance and you will honestly go very far here.

Big push to hire young diverse women. If you're anything other than that, stay away or you'll get RIF'd. Company is almost 70% women now.

I am in IT and part of 10/20 RIF. IT leadership was good when I joined 8 years back but in declined from last few years. Since lot of jobs going to offshore. Quality of work went down since the inception of legato. you are forced to schedule all your meetings in morning early hours to accommodate offshore. Plus the commute to pulse location felt like a punishment as your manager/VP decides which day you go to office when they themselves hardly show up. The number of KTs you do when any new junior associate join is just a pain in the A**.

If you are good at boot lic***g managers/VPs to be in their good books, It’s a good place to be.

For me RIF came as blessing in disguise. I found a better paying job (almost 60% Jump in paycheck) before 10/20.

So if you decide to join IT. Learn fast and move on.

I'm from IT he-- no. Long hours work holidays and weekends, and early hours to accommodate off shore, long hours at night. Ruthless, thankless, could depend what pulse point office your in

No! If you can find a job in IT anywhere else, take it, but don't come to this company. Your job will eventually be moved offshore for cheaper labor costs.

If you need a job and this is your only choice, then ok.

If you are being an offered a role such that it will give you experience with skills you currently do not have, then maybe.

Working here you need to have thick skin, not being afraid of being laid off at anytime (as long as it a Thursday of a non-paycheck week).

Depending upon the role being offered, your current skills and the skills you will acquire on this role, then you may not lock yourself into the role being offered.

If you are not already an employee here, the core benefits (med/dental/vision/life/401k) are comparable to other companies. Raises for the past 12 years have been about 2%. Bonus can vary. The percent of the bonus should be in the offer letter. Know that the company has lowered these percentages over the years.

If you have other opportunities outside of this company, then I would advise you to skip this company and focus on the others.

Depends on what part of IT. Help desk can be frustrating as there’s always broken updates being pushed out. Coding can be a mindless grind, but if that’s your thing, lots to go around. New product development can range from thankless to rewarding depending on your manager and/or your task match. Don’t go in blindly and take where ever they stick you. Gotta find a match for your skills and personality.

IT is typically for a public company of this size. Depending on your career goals, might fit in nicely. Think of yourself as a renter and not an owner and expectations will match.
