I find that a lot of time is wasted in the office with small talk. Not to mention the 2 hour commute
My connection at home is also better and would be much better if they let me VPN directly into the main servers in San Antonio without going through Houston (since I live most of the time in south Austin).
Mine too.
@fwf The network is faster? What building are you in? My connection and access at home is far better than when I’m in the office.
Being a tech expert, an office with open (rotating) seating would be unproductive to me. I need reference materials that are not always digital, I need to set up connections to multiple computers, and I find the commotion surrounding open office cubicles very distracting (causing me to make more errors). A two hour commute makes me unwilling to spend much extra work time hitting project deadlines, nor to spent time after hours chatting with folks assigned to distant offices. Start controlling my workplace with arbitrary fixed rules and micromanagement, then expect a new focus by me that prioritized leisurely coffee drinking rather than my current laser focus of getting the job done well and on time. Management proving they don’t respect and trust me as an employee is the surest way for management to get exactly what the expect (not much and little more).!
All of the of space is rapidly headed toward open plans and no assigned seating. I personally don’t care about going back to the office, but the office itself is getting worse.
Just common sense. Easier to talk to people in the office than virtually. Network is faster. Kids don’t distract, and as long as it’s not a stupid open cubicle plan where you get distracted by cough, fa-t, or person that walks by, you can get good work done. More folks in the expensive office makes sense, unless you’re a CNE SME on the 11th floor.
