Thread regarding Belk layoffs

What Will Happen to Belk in 2024?

Belk is still struggling nearly 4 years since Covid Shutdown in March 2020. Stores are operating with minimal coverage, limited fitting rooms open, two or three people closing, limited back of house (truck, dock team).. no cash registers open creating excessive lines, a drab, uninspiring selection of clothing and shoes. Will Belk survive in 2024? Will the failed "outlet concept" continue or will Belk close those stores? Will Belk contine to advertise "hiring with flex schedules" all while cutting hours of existing staff, hiring new staff and then giving them no hours? Will Belk change to a 14 day return policy? Will "golden stores" contine to be Golden or will they fail? What will happen to Belk in 2024?.....that's what everyone wants to know....

I was a 1 Million Dollar woman’s shoe Sales Consultant at one of the Flag Ship stores from 2016-2021 making between 50-70k after all incentives and commissions during my employment.
After COVID-19 came I was thrown into shipping like I was just another number on the roster & offered a $16 wage at reduced working hours.
The same as a high school kid or college student working part-time and it became obvious after other stores were closing the company was headed down hill.

After my pay change, 1 year later they never restored my pay structure as I was promised by HR—they started filling the department with minimum wage employees that were leaving every 2 weeks like a revolving door.

This company obviously doesn’t appreciate their employees I would be very weary of considering this company if you are looking for a career and not a job.

@4k1mm
We’ve had a revolving door of store managers at my store. The last manager left on vacation and she never came back, they had to throw her stuff away.

I worked for belk the last 5 years and then after all my hard work they up and fired me ,claiming it was for breaking company policy, yet every employee in many stores was asked to do.. GUESS WHAT, IT WAS NEVER A POLICY until after the day I was let go. Everything I'm reading in these posts are true. I have acquired an attorney doing what should have been done , it's time they stop treating their hard workers like cr-p and quit lying. Everyone should have been fired including regional and hr levels if the policy was being wronged, so also a discrimination case against me has been opened.

Just look at all the online customer complaints about belk, in addition to the tons of employee complaints, that should tell you everything you need to know.

I work for Belk as a part time flex employee. I haven't had a scheduled day in over 4 months. But they will call me and expect me to jump and run at a moments notice just for the hours. If you say no they say then they won't call you anymore. This is inhumane treatment. Plain and simple! If anyone is interested there is a way we can remove Sycamore Partners. Also, we have a class action lawsuit that we can file! Sycamore Partners has managed to siphon off over 3 billion dollars since 2016. They lied in their contract to Belk about what they intended to do. They even had the bankruptcy judge in their back pocket! It was the fastest bankruptcy ever! Sycamore Partners is steady looking for ways to steal more money from us. They keep us on the payroll for the head count because they are getting money from a government program. DOJ has started an investigation but it will be years before they realize what we have know for a while. We are being duped!

Belk lost more managers between 2017-2021, then in the 20 year period before. For some reason belk wants to hire all Macys rejects who have been fired from Macys for everything under the sun, it’s crazy.

Shame what happened to this place. I had been there about 14 years and shortly after the Sycamore purchase it just tanked. I was a department manager for most of my time there. They started trying to run off managers and people who had been there for enough years that they were making a decent salary or hourly wage. Our regional manager, Becky was awful. No idea how she ended up in the position but she clearly was inept and deficient of any managerial skills. Just brought in former Macy's people to try to run people out of their positions if they were long term employees. They replaced me with a Macy's reject who was sweet but not at all qualified to manage anything. But hey I'm sure they saved a buck or two. "Corporate HR" took all the complaints that were made by employees and basicially used that to target certain people for removal if they spoke up. Just a real sh!t show. Getting run out was the best thing that happened to us ultimately.

Belk provided for me and my family for over 20 years. It was an amazing place to work and grow for many years. Unfortunately much of what is said in these articles and comments are now true. Nearly all the executive teams have been made up of former Macys employees, who talk about how miserable it was working for them only to bring the same values and culture to Belk. There is no consistency in setting goals, reviews or planning. They calculate work load hours for everything, and budget you far less leaving the stores to decide what gets done or not. Then walk into the store and ask why things aren’t done. As far as leadership above the store level, no real plans on how to fix any thing and most never worked in a store…there biggest help to stores is saying “good managers find a way” and I agree good manager find a way out, to a better place to work!!!

I worked for Belk in management for 6 years. When the Belk family was the owners it was OK. But when Sycamore bought then it went straight to he'll. I would never recommend this company to anyone. They do not care about any of the employees at the store level. The human resource department is a joke and full of people who should be fired. Loss prevention is non effective and you can walk out with ever you want. It's a horrible company and I would NEVER recommend

So very sad! Belk was once a proud, classy and fashionable southern based store. I hate to see it go but "the times the are a changin" and sadly I don't see Belk being able to adapt to this new marketplace

I just quit the Belk in Brevard NC and it’s ran so poorly! The assistant manager doesn’t know what she’s doing. All the they care about is credit cards and not customer service. The bathrooms are always not disgusting and nasty. The sales floor is always a mess and no one around to help customers. Because the help is always hanging out with the managers in the office. Shoplifters are always coming in multiple times a week and it’s the same ones and the employees just basically wave at them as they walk out. And it’s the same shoplifters every week. They even try to give the shoplifters credit cards. It’s so hilarious. Just couldn’t take any more head quit.

They will fail. The stimulus after Covid is the only thing that saved them then!
That money has run out! Their employees are greedy cheats; they run off and cheat extremely talented employees. They will all close very soon. Why prolong the pain. Close now.

This is being done to my mother right now. She’s a top employee for 32 years and they have changed and cut hours. Asking her to flex… they do not care about their employees. This article may help my mom out because it shows exactly how they treated her and many others.

They already failed to make one bankruptcy payment and are about to fail again. All of the stores in North Florida have been closed, and the majority of managers, regional managers, and GVPs are former Macy rejects with little to no experience in the industry. Half of the RVPs are unable to read, and they stammer throughout the endless team meetings that they attend from their homes while wearing pajamas. The firm as a whole is a joke; they have nothing intelligent to say to store managers other than, "We don't care about customers or sales; money is what matters."

So yes. They’re in trouble.

Take a hard look at Bed Bath and Beyond retail company. They are in pain and about to file bankruptcy or liquidation anytime now. Wake up if you think Belk is going to survive and growing again. Top and big executives and Sycamore Partners don’t care about you only how big and how deep to collect profits and cold cash in their pockets! Happy New Year 2024!

Yes we do want to know but we probably won't until it finally shuts down. And you are so correct in your assessment of belk. Our store is a pitiful joke run by people so heartless and greedy .
