Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Member here. I’m frustrated with what is happening to this company

  • I’ve been frustrated with the processes and technology this coming uses for years even when needing to complete simple tasks.
  • The news stories as of late about fraud and regulatory violations is especially concerning.
  • The company is continuing to hemorrhage money.
  • Now I’m reading about what it’s like for employees and honestly I’m at the point where I think it’s time to bury this corpse and move on… but before I do is there anything members can do to save this sinking ship?

Take your business elsewhere and let them know it's because you found competitive products elsewhere, I am certain you will I know I did, but what made you start to look is the the absolute disregard of the mission, military members and it's employees. Pretty final and objective.

I call BS - I think this is an employee (who are also "members") posing as a non-employee member.

If you’re looking at working at USAA and you really need the job, take it. You can always keep looking for something else while you work. I’m a returning employee and I’ve never seen morale this low. I’m currently looking for something else and just waiting till bonus. I wish things were different because there are some great people here, but the higher-ups have unfortunately ruined the atmosphere. Hoping something new lands pretty soon.

Depending on what area, you can make a good career here. After three years, you are vested in a pension, which some firms donot offer, so there is a plus. Pay is good, bonus is good. Culture is fine, its really no different elsewhere…

I hope I can get a reply before it’s too late. My girlfriend currently has the opportunity to work at USAA. At the moment we are waiting for the background check to clear before she has to make her final decision. I am reading a lot of these post and they all seem negative. Is it that bad? Should she look else where? She is 25 and she is looking for a career, a company to retire at. Is USAA no longer that? Would really appreciate any inside opinions. Thank you

This is far from a dream drop, it turned into more of a nightmare over the course of 3 years. The only ones that care about the members are the ones with no control on where this place is headed

thanks to those who answered my question below about the “dream job”. I also looked at Glassdoor.com and it’s clear that USAA is badly broken. I feel for you guys :(

Before planning a move here, read the thread here. This is the place feel "safe" to post their authentic thoughts about USAA. If you think you can survive (and notice that I did not say "thrive") and you have zero alternative opportunities, only then go for it.

I predict that very quickly you will notice the toxic work environment. Most folks are just silent, to survive. Some backstab, thinking that this will get them ahead. But, bottom line, do not believe the job description.

Best of luck to you!

If you are geographically restricted and the job really looks like a great fit and pays well then why not? But be prepared for a work situation that is less than ideal. This is not the USAA of yesteryear. There are still some good people inside despite the rot at the top.

But as always, it's a good idea to step back from how you are thinking about your situation and ask yourself if you don't actually have more options than you think you have. I've got my path forward and will probably stay for a little while longer, but I'd be hard pressed to recommend anyone I know apply to USAA today unless they had very few options.

Former employee here and your post really struck a chord with me. When I was hired, I was elated. I thought I’d retire from USAA and I was proud to be there. It took little to no time for that mindset to be broken and I always thought of the members. I wondered how soon things would implode and you would be impacted. After all, we worked FOR you. I’m sorry it has reached this point. You are tied to this mission and we have failed you. Be diligent and shop around. Get your accounts out and set up shop elsewhere. Thank you for considering us in your thought process. Most of us think about you everyday.

So, I just saw an almost dream position at USAA in Plano that is a staff position. Is it a safe bet to assume it is best to avoid USAA like the plague?

If you’re a member, go submit a CEO complaint and see where or how far it goes. NOTE: They used to address them but not sure with the current landscape since employee sentiments no longer matter.

Current employees (or prior employees who received severance package) has no voice and those who were let go with severance package is at risk of losing their severance.

At the very top of the company it's all external drop-in execs and former consultants. Veterans are almost non-existent. The Mission is no longer anything more than marketing fluff.

Company leadership seems determined to mirror every decision made by the current administration in DC - especially the more insane ones. It's a dumpster fire.

I agree 100% with this poster. I wanted to add that the Board of Directors is no longer listening to the employees. As the ship has been sinking, employees have tried to reach out and are being punished for speaking their minds.

It is just a matter of time before everything USAA once stood for will be gone.

Employees are intimidated and bullied. The atmosphere is dog-eat-dog. There is no room for true innovation, and experienced employees are jumping ship ASAP.

No. The torpedo is already in the water to sink the USAA battleship. Greed at the top has destroyed what good is left in the company. Large bonus payouts and golden parachutes for the execs. We continue to bleed talent due to poor management. High value employees jump overboard once they see the real beast. You cannot run a business with consultants guiding the way and contractors as your primary employee source.
