It looks like I will get a candid response here. I have an offer on the table from Allstate but it doesn’t appear to take my location into account with the salary. Are their pay bands different for each city? I live in an expensive area of the country. I may counter with that explanation but I am curious if it’s even factored into their salary structure? Thanks!

Allstate pays national median for pay. There is no regional adjustment. Esurance had four zones for pay but that went away years ago.
Allstate pays low because leadership thinks employees are interchangeable. They’d like to have everyone at the mid-point of the market… meaning they pretty much anyone can get a new job with better pay. This is why it’s such a mess there, you’ll be working with the C Team. Oh, and the most recent round of layoffs targeted people who were making more than 70% of their band. Enjoy.
TRUTH-The bands for exempt are not different by city or state. Exempt is CW band structure People who work in Florida, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Texas, etc. benefit from the exempt band structure and join multiple country clubs. In metropolitan areas, where the money is actually made for the company have never been compensated comparatively. You just live with it.
I would decline the offer and not look back. Place has been a dumpster fire for a few years now & layoffs are routine.
Allstate is not known for paying above market. I believe they state “competitive”, which is subject to interpretation. My experience is they promote believed talent into higher bands to pay more (as opposed to simply paying more within a band at the level of the actual work). and as a result, exposes talent to calibration assessment that question and label that talent impacting their growth status. Bottom line, don’t be afraid to set your scale and if they cannot meet, walk away regardless of band level.
My advice:
- Good to ask about and understand the band/job grade offered for position
- If the job comes with an annual bonus, you will really want the most salary possible because the bonus payout always starts with your pay
- ALWAYS get the money going in the door. Never accept a salary thinking you will later get a raise; rarely happens. Best you'll get is COLA once a year.
- Never be afraid to ask for and receive what you're worth!
The argument that "it's pretty standard for most industries" doesn't conform to my experiences (30 years, different companies, different industries). Allstate was the only place I worked that didn't have a COLA for salaries and bands.
Of course, Allstate will take advantage of lower wage economies like NI and India.
I’ve been gone for about two years and assuming there hasn’t been any change… If you’re an exempt employee there’s no actual salary adjustment, that’s only for hourly employees. You may be moved up in the range, but no adjustment. That’s pretty standard for most industries.
The answer is yes.
Yeah, they don't adjust salary for region. The "best" you can hope for is that the hiring manager will bring you in close to top of band, which means you'll never get a decent raise.
Run away
Interesting...someone that claims to have an offer as a newly hired Allstate employee asking about wages on a known layoff site chock full of angry vindictive people who hate this company....
I smell a troll.
Very very few changes in place for geography. Alaska is one.
