Supervisor in case management keeps bringing up the recent layoffs & states our future is uncertain, supervisor seems to think this is an effective way to basically whip us into shape in terms of improving metrics, the words “prove your worth since the future is uncertain” were used in reference to past and upcoming layoffs. Management at Cigna are psychopaths!! I knew from day 1, but damn. Very effective leadership

I understand. Why work your a$# off to just get terminated.
Not sabotaging as much as I'm good enough at what I do it takes me very little effort to keep up with the status quo. Before I was pulling my weight and others as well. I don't see the point of going beyond the bare minimum when I'll just be rewarded with threats and layoffs. That effort can be spent getting a 30k+ pay bump elsewhere. I'm good with being laid off from this sh-t show if push comes to shove.
Why are you self-sabatoging then? Because you are upset others got laid off and you figure why not? Let someone else pick up the slack? Or because you have no work?
One of the head managers for my team gave us a similar speech. Since, I have went from being a top performer to maybe doing 1 day of work a week and filling out applications the rest. Or just sc--wing off. Scare tactics like this only serve to pi-s me off; I know I can make a huge pay bump elsewhere.
Your manager was probably told the same thing by their manager.
We were aligned to a new organization a while back. Anyone who has questioned anything has been job eliminated. If you question alignment on certain projects when limited sme’s are being moved without transfer of knowledge, they noted that. When being ‘9 box’ ranked, those questions dropped you in that ranking. They kept the ones that are solely there for an 8 hour a day paycheck. No passion or concern about the bigger picture and the clients we’re trying to serve. The roof will cave on some of these big projects because they can’t see what they’ve done.
Are they laying off more people at Cigna?
Listen, I get you all think he's trying to give a heads up but the reality is, "proving your worth" isn't guaranteeing anything. First, I agree, always do your best at everything including work. However, most in these layoffs are not performance issues, very rare that it is.
The issue is that if you make a good salary and if you are over 50 years old, sadly, the bullseye smacks right on you. Unfair? Absolutely but they hang severance over you to waive that so it gets swept under the rug.
I agree your supervisor is trying to clue you in. Been with the company nearly 20 years… few have as much dignity as that.
How unfortunate that supervisor remains in leadership when 4 leaders were let go last fall who clearly did not treat their teams like that. Sounds like they are worried about themselves to be honest.
F*ck them. Leave. Do whatever you can to leave asap. It’s work but living in fear is horrible too.
This approach is gross. Management already know their favorites and their strong performers. Saying this is just trying to wring more work from a group of anxious employees. That being said, it may be the manager's desperate attempt to keep their own employment through this uncertain time.
"Your supervisor gave you a big heads up in how to keep your job. It may not have been said well. That sounds like a hint, not a threat. JMHO."
Except the hint/heads up is vague and would likely create more anxiety than help. Telling someone to prove their worth or bring value without defining what that means is meaningless, especially if you're in a dept that is not heavily dependent on metrics that can easily be measured or the metrics you're being rated against are next to impossible to meet.
It's an empty piece of advice without anything actionable to take from it. I'm sure all of us here can point to people who have been laid off in the last year who brought value and were still axed, while others stayed simply because they were friends with someone higher up who protected them.

MA or Cigna?

Well, although the situation all of us are in (that one of uncertainty) is unfortunate, no lies were told from your supervisor. They probably know only a few will be kept, unfortunately. Seems like a heads up. And before the downvotes start - no I am not Cigna HR posting anonymously
