If I were Paul and I wanted to keep this job, I’d be thinking about impressing the people that actually pull the strings and find a way to increase profit. Sometimes, the only way to do that in the beginning is to make big bold moves. I’d be hunting right now if I were anyone in middle management.
Whose to say but it's beyond your control. Base on your knowledge that you know anybody can be cut, what will you do about it? You can ask this question but the answer has been presented repeatedly. There are things beyond your control. You can either stay or actively look for another job, posting on a layoff forum isn't doing you any favors. Those are your choices in the end.
