"Layoffs actually began in 2022" is correct. And they used a pandemic to force people out and get a jumpstart on the RIFs.
Layoffs actually began in 2022 and were methodically planned for months in advance before secretly being rolled out across multiple teams throughout corporate.
In 2019, TMO’s 10-K disclosed 53k employees with Sprint’s 10-K at 28,500 for a total combined employee count of 81,500. TMO’s goal has always been to get back to the pre-merger employee count of 53k.
T-Mobile’s latest 10-K (dated fiscal year ending 12/31/22) shows 71k employees, which is 10,500 less employees since the close of the merger (4/1/2020) and DOES NOT include the “publicly announced” layoff of 5k employees in 2023.
If my calculations are correct (and assuming TMO didn’t “secretly” layoff more than the announced 5k in 2023), the total employee count as of 2024 would be 66,000 which means, (if you believe T-Mobile intends to get back to its pre-merger number of 53k employees) T-Mobile would need to layoff an additional 13k employees.
For some reason, I doubt T-Mobile will make any more public announcements regarding layoffs which would mean, they’ll have to go with the “death by a thousand cuts” approach vs. the kinder and more respectable, “one-and-done” approach.

Verizon said goodbye to almost 12,000 employees last year. They will get their headcount under 100k this year.
Head count? At least 3x per day with some bosses.

RDMs are all former TMO corporate store managers that couldn’t move up on magenta side.
They have brought the shady tactics from their stores to Metro and force people to slam customers who can’t really afford it.
When ACP ends they will get sc--wed.

What ever the employee count ends up being they need to layoff the metro RDM's. Biggest waste of an employee. Talk about getting paid to do nothing.
T-Mobile used to grapple with the problem of each Director building their empire, driven by a culture that believed having more resources in their organization increased their chances of promotion. This behavior was enabled by the fearlessly toxic ID--T Marcus East. It resulted in a complete mess with no accountability. I believe that despite the layoffs last year, they could function more productively as a team.
Now, they should adopt a similar approach at the Director/Sr. Directors/VP levels by merging or combining to attain better economies of scale. The objective is to return to the resource levels seen before the merger.
The 2024 annual report will show 55K or less.
2024 will see monthly smaller layoffs with a goal of 50k employees by EOY.
Was a PR nightmare when they “announced” 5K reduction in 2023, but was closer to 7K when you take into account the Metro layoffs and store closings.
So going forward there will be smaller ones not limited to but including: call centers, Ops, retail, SMRA, and IT.
