Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Job offer

I was offered a job with Centene Oklahoma complete health but I’m doing all the research I can before hand. After finding this page I’m concerned! Why are they hiring so many if they are laying off?? Is this a safe place to work? I don’t want to quit my job for some where that’s going to lay me off in a year.

Thanks for the feedback. Although I initially accepted the offer I turned it down today. I’m just a bit uneasy about the security of the company at this point!

Take the job if you don't have anything else lined up and look for other opportunities while at Centene. I resigned from Centene in September (East Coast) and I know that the job postings for Oklahoma were there for months, noone was in a hurry to hire and they kept changing the position descriptions...I know because I wanted to relocate to Oklahoma and I was looking for internal opportunities. Keep in mind that PTO with Centene is use it or lose it end of the year so use your PTO every month and don't leave sick leave on the table either. I think that Oklahoma has a small team so that could be a blessing or a curse depending on your direct supervisor.

I left my previous nursing position (5+ years) early 2023. I was laid off in 12/8 round. I gained experience so I’m thankful for that and was able to secure a remote position post layoff. I don’t regret accepting my job with Centene but I wouldn’t get too comfortable with the position. If you need experience, go for it but understand that there aren’t many guarantees. I was reassured over and over how long coworkers had been with the company during my onboarding, yet here we are.

Centene is very unstable, the company is going backwards since New CEO and CFO are burning it to the ground, it would be my last choice if I get to choose

I was exactly where you are a year ago and I chose Centene.

It wasn't a good choice. Keep looking whether you accept the offer or not. But I would wait for another offer if I were you.

The OK Medicaid contract is pretty strict about local hiring and presence so you'd be pretty safe for a while given that it's a new plan. Most of the recent layoffs were corporate shared services or health plan roles being centralized.

Centene just recently received the Oklahoma contract so that’s why they’re hiring so many Oklahoma positions. I have been an employee for about 11 years and I will say that now it’s very very iffy. The things that I have seen happen recently are things that I have not seen within all my years here at this organization. This company used to be one thing but it’s quickly changing into another so I would say you definitely have to do what you think is best for you and your situation but at the same time no job is guaranteed with any company layoffs can happen anywhere.

I think you answered your own question. There are no guarantees with any job in present day AMerica - there hasn't been job security for well over 20 years if not longer. Every industry across the country have been doing mass layoffs and this company just did 2 - one in August '23 and then another at the end of September '23. They also did a mass layoff in 2022 and 2021. Its seems to be every year now if not more than once in a year at this rate. They are also at will which means that at any given time they can terminate you for any reason except those prohibited by law. At the end of the day - no you are not safe and neither is anyone else that is currently employed, just hired or about to be hired. Why they are hiring after ruining the lives of thousands of people - well your guess is as good as mine. I wager on the side of greed and the consequences of the multitude of lawsuits pending against them.

At the end of the day you need to decide if it's worth the risk to you.
