Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Another One Bites the Dust

And another one bites the dust! So long CHRO. While I realize the email indicates the reason she is leaving and hope she is okay. She really destroyed the culture at USAA and treated a lot of employees terribly. For those that aligned themselves with her, hopefully you had enough sense not to treat people bad because the days of having her protection are counting down. You can’t treat people poorly nor align yourself with a leader like that. I knew her days were limited. May she be able to rest and come to peace given how she treated employees, bad decisions, and implemented policies that were just wrong.

Wishing a better hire in the next go round!

I wonder how much she got for the partnership with Guild for the education program. Was looking for something online and came across some older events where she and the CEO of Guild were doing talks together at HR conferences. I know people do this all the time but with everything going on it just puts stuff in a new light and makes everything look fishy. Weird stuff

Just like your salary. Another expense that can be eliminated in 2024.

Didn’t she buy the fantastic benefit she offered us with additional medical coverage in case of unexpected medical issues?

Hopefully the next CHRO will dial back on the Cultural Marxism. It's toxic.

If you truly love your job, are truly medically ill, and have any loyalty (especially at her level), a leave of absence for medical reasons would seem the right thing to do.

In a truly great company that I worked for (not this sham of a company), the President had cancer. He told no one until the bitter, sad end. He showed up to work in spite of his chemo treatments. I knew this great man personally.

He cared about the company he helped to build, the opportunity that company gave to him, and he knew many of us personally. He would never harm us. There was a succession plan in place, and I am sure he helped its vision.

I think he left roughly one month before he passed away.

Ugh oh, TOF was not able to select early next year as her separation date because she changed the PTO policy to not front-load, she can't cash in on PTO! And she did not wait for the annual bonus, so I am pretty sure she was fired.

If she really has personal or health issues, why not take a leave of absence?? Hmmm…

Post ID: @1qdb+1q3z4GVX

Why doesn't TOF take a Medical Leave of Absence like the rest of us would have to do? First short-term then long-term.

Why the resignation?

Does anyone know what her Golden Parachute payoff ... Er, payout .... Will be?

Can we expect a book in the near future? If anyone can bypass an NDA, it should be the head of HR, right? I'd love to read what has been going on behind the scenes!

It's highly likely that the pro-TOF comments below are none other than TOF herself. Whoelse? That's so sad.

Let's see...

You create phoney PIPs to improve your layoff numbers, targeting segments of the population simply because you can;

You lay people off because you can;

Your "leader" builds a multimillion dollar mansion in the midst of this because he can and the Board provides him the AMPLE bonuses in the midst of employee suffering;

You dump tons of work on those left working because you can;

Your "leader" attends events with well-known figures at parties because he can and because you are under the delusion that this makes those other hardworking employees feel ... What?....pride?

Your "leader" takes a huge bonus ... Oh, wait a minute, not one but multiple huge bonuses from every area of the company...while hardworking employees get cuts in their meager benefits and bonuses and salaries!???

And you say it is those of us who post honestly on this site who are causing hate?

Someone quick! Grab a mirror...these people don't see themselves.

And we are supposed to say what? Yessir, we adore you????

Hate is such a strong word and don’t think I have seen anyone say they “hate” anyone or anything. You are blowing it out of disportion. It’s more of a strong dislike. The name calling and insulting people because of their roles is purely disrespectful and sad.

TOF only made it about 18 months so apparently she can't do the job of a CHRO either despite all the praise you want to give her.

There isn't be a need to decode anything in that e-mail. TOF has a profile on LinkedIn and she will do all the decoding herself. Once she has another job by February or March, you'll know that the sudden decision for her to leave USAA had nothing to do with health problems.

If you think TOF is leaving on her terms then you are clueless when it comes to decoding executive termination announcements. There are a lot of clues in the email, and all of them indicate she was fired and there was no succession planning.

Get over yourself and stop being an apologist for people who could care less of you have a job or not.

TOF is in a senior leadership position and is open to any and all criticism just like any other senior leader. She played a role in transforming USAA's benefits to something quite a bit less than "world-class". And the doublespeak from her and other in senior leadership is the reason why employee morale is what it is. These people can't say USAA's benefits are "world-class" one day and then announce a change to USAA's benefits that is in line with the rest of the industry. Ever the benefits are "world-class" or the benefits are on-par with the rest of industry.

She’s a great person and did her best. Can’t none of y’all on here criticizing do the job of a CHRO. So y’all need to chill. Let her be great and let her leave USAA on her terms. Y’all just jealous y’all don’t have the choice and financial means to walk away from a job that no longer works for you. TOF needs to be celebrated as someone having the courage to honor herself vs being a martyr, running herself into the ground. So stop hating on her. You don’t know what it’s like to walk a mile in her shoes.

Yes, a passionate apology for the sanitation management industry is exactly what is called for in this moment. Right after our talmudic level study of expense management and compliance. USAA shills lobbing distractions, we see you from a mile off.

I’ve never understood why people are so snobby about WM.

Having been stationed overseas and seeing what happens when sanitation workers go on strike or cities are so mismanaged that the trash isn’t picked up, I have a lot of respect for companies across the US that let us live in communities without heaping piles of trash on our streets.

To each his own but my view is that people who provide vital services and the people who support them don’t deserve the derision sometimes found on this site.

Wow glad she’s gone. It’s not just four day she promoted. She forced DEI hiring quotas that were tied to manager bonuses during the pandemic. Google open letter to USAA board from STARR for more details

Just go to one of the many cafes at USAA, including Starbucks. A personal chef will make you pretty much whatever you want to eat or drink for breakfast or lunch. You people crack me up!!

I have been in business and doing business travel for a long time. Unless you are an officer/admin/accounting/audit, you would not have access to other people's expenses or APPROVED exceptions. Once again for the people in the back, APPROVED exceptions. Stop trying to act like you are something you are not or that you play the system, especially after talking about leaders' expenses. You gave yourself away with the "probably following the rules" comment. You are just trying to spread rumors and hate.

  1. Hire a scapegoat that will carry out your orders.
  2. Fire scapegoat when employees express dissatisfaction or scapegoat develops a backbone.
  3. Keep unpopular policies/changes in place since blame has already been assigned and the scapegoat was fired ("justice theatre").
  4. Goto step 1.

While I would love to debate with you, I wont. You are obviously not privy to certain accommodations that are done at the EC level and the exceptions they can make. I know what I know. If you are in a position to pull up and audit prior corp card expenses by all means feel free to do so.

I think I understand preapproval for an exception. I also understand compliance and auditing standards. Maybe do a bit of reading on the subject. Never hurts.

You can also get an exception when choosing a higher rate hotel. You enter in a reason as to why and your boss approves it. You probably follow the rules so don’t know how to get an override. Thanks for doing your part!

The EC have a personal chef prepare their breakfast and lunch five days a week. All on the company dime.

Wayne’s toxic work environment is finally impacting his direct reports. Tamla may be the first but will not be the last of the EC to leave the sinking ship. This event exposes USAA’s lack of succession planning. The succession plan for a normal company would not place a chief of staff member in an HR exec role with no prior HR experience. Especially one who has been employed at USAA for less than a year. Guess it is sink or swim around here now.

I have traveled often for business needs, and you can only use hotels preapproved by the company with set limits. If not, the company does not reimburse receipts or pay your credit card used for food, travel and lodging. You have to show receipts for everything to align with daily/weekly allocation. I have never heard of anyone getting a personal chief on the company dime. Where did you get your information concerning expense theft or abuse?

Yes, she implemented budget cuts which caused less than stellar benefits dictated to her but she could have been more mindful by her and her AVP not staying at the Regis or othe luxury hotels on our members dime or paying personal chefs. If USAA is implementing those types of cuts, then they should be conscientious on how they come across. Leadership 101.

There are a few comments on here about TOF I haven't fully agreed with, either way I'm hoping her exit signifies the tide is turning at USAA. To give her the benefit of the doubt she may have tried to advocate for employees behind the scenes. But I've also heard stories of HR scheming to unfairly terminate employees, deny unemployment etc. All very murky rumors but seemingly something that would have to be enabled top down, so I don't really know.

She implemented the benefit cuts, but it was probably to meet budget targets that Wayne gave her. So don't expect benefits to be restored any time soon unless you see other big changes to messaging from the top.

You all do realize that a majority of the companies that allowed WFH during the pandemic have retracted that incentive. Chase was a huge advocate of RTO, along with Citi, Wells Fargo, BOA, Whataburger, Walmart, Amazon and the list goes on. This action is not specific to USAA. The city also wanted RTO to help stimulate the economy for local businesses. I understand that you don't like it, neither did I, but that does not change the fact that the business has 100% of the say regarding how they operate.

Wonder what will happen with all the department changes in the name of “running HR like business”
As they look for their next StepFord CHRO, I hope they think about how they roadblocked the employee by making it difficult to reach out to Employee Relations, Leaves, Benefits,EdASSIST….which should be available to support the employee’s. Those options were blocked because the HR leaders don’t really care anymore about employee concerns and feedback. Nothing is confidential in HR anymore!

This just in: She was forced out because the employee morale was not low enough! Wayne wanted more wallowing and misery, with no hope on the horizon. "I'm sorry Tamla, but 33% employee satisfaction ain't gonna cut it! I wanted it in the low single digits, which means just us execs, and you failed to deliver. Jeez, now I'll need to sharpen up my horns and fangs and show everyone how misery in done right! 2024 will be that year, salute me now!!! Absolutely no more WFH! Everyone but me gets a pay cut! Oh, and happy holidays!"

I personally never dealt with her because I’m too much of a peon. What I can say is I’ve seen a huge shift in the culture and benefits. And the way they give us their shrug off answers when legitimate questions are being asked basically means get on board or get out.
If she was the fu---s to our culture decay, so long. If she was just the lackey, then they will just find another one to take her place.

But what about the damage she has done to the company? That was unacceptable. Leaving us all with this trash benefits and HR policies. Hoping we can immediately undo them.

She’ll get a huge severance to stack nicely on the sign on bonus she received, and once she lands in a new place with another sign on bonus, she’ll bring along all her lackeys so they can get another sign on bonus for following her. Destroying one corp at a time, and making a lot of money doing it. Your insurance rates just went up again.

So happy she is gone! She ruined the company moral, caused once world class benefits to be no more. Clearly, she was ousted. Especially given the employee morale was still low in the last company meeting. I hope the company takes a moment to reflect and reverse some changes. Who the he-l says 4 day RTO is Hybrid!!! what a joke.
