Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

How is the job search going?

Those of you who are (relatively) freshly laid off or those of you who know folks like that, how is your/their job search going? I've been hearing horror stories about the job market in our field lately, and I'm wondering if they're true or is it just people making assumptions without actually knowing for sure.

I wasn’t laid off but had enough after 14 years. Landed at a competitor making substantially more and with a gasp bonus. Stayed for a year and then landed at an even better gig in a commercial carrier. The trend amongst those I know that left seems to be that if you can break away, there are far better options where the employer will respect you and reward according to performance.

I loved working for Allstate for a long time. You will be happy when you leave and go to a good company regardless of pay. Work for a good company with good people and be happy.

I only know 2 folks that have been impacted recently. 1 has accepted a position elsewhere with a significant raise and will start a few days after they leave. The other is still looking.

I got lucky, a week after all my stuff was revoked I was able to get a new position doing almost the same thing for a 40% pay increase. Thanks Allstate for pushing me to actively find and land better opportunities. I didn’t even use the Allstate service that they gave us for job help, even after all they pester me to talk to them every other day.

I just cast out a wide net on linkedin, and applied to what I thought would be a good fit for.

Best advice? Don’t confuse all activities with actual progress. Case in point, spending all your time randomly applying to job postings in LinkedIn. You MUST invest heavily in networking. Which for many is outside of comfort zone. Making connections and leveraging connections is best strategy. And NEVER ask a network contact directly for a job, but rather seek their advice on how you might learn more about the company, what areas may be hiring, what the company looks for in candidates…and if that all goes well and your network contact finds you credible, then asking them if they would be willing to put in a good work for you with the hiring team. Sitting behind a computer screen all day and blindly applying to mass quantities of job postings on LinkedIn will get you nowhere UNLESS you take the additive essential step of building a network. Have to get out of your comfort zone. And when you interview, NEVER badmouth Allstate or any other employer you’ve had. Always talk in terms of how your work experiences have enabled your skills inventory and adaptability to grow. Companies don’t want whiners and jaded individuals…they want diversified battle tested skill sets, a record of achievements and success stories and people who ooze work ethic and positivity and who flash minimal drama.

Are there other significant opportunities for insurance jobs in NI other than Allstate???

Yeah, I would expect people leaving Allstate to wind up in non-insurance jobs. I would also expect that the skills they used/developed at Allstate would translate to other sectors. It's not like people were sitting for actuarial or CPCU exams.

I've spoke to 10-15:in ANI who said their next job will be outside Insurance/ I.T. Fire Service / Government Jobs / retail. The whole Insurance industry has taken a hit, the next 12 months will interesting / scary / uncertain so it's worthwhile for all to consider options. And good luck

I reached out to people I knew at other companies, small to midsize companies especially, and found a great spot. Very happy with the change. Have found recruiters to not be all that helpful, but knowing someone at a company you for worked.

And there you go…..Allstate gets bashed on this site because of layoffs. The reality is that the same is occurring at 90% of the insurance companies out there. It is an industry undergoing significant change. I have been lucky so far, but I tell my kids to avoid insurance as a career. Technology advances- especially in AI will eventually wipe out most career opportunities. Thankfully I only have a couple years left. Good luck to all.
