Thread regarding Suncor Energy Inc. layoffs

What’s next after the layoff?

Just wondering what is the next step after the layoff? Accept it, and Jon counselling obviously. We were told this layoff is not a site ban, and we can come back as contractors or Suncor employees if a position open back up.

Is anyone going to come back as a contractor?

How many people are going to use the layoff as a 1-way ticket out of Fort McMurray?

As a former Suncor employee I also observed that not only older employees were laid off but also younger EITs who were minorities. They got the boot too. At one point, I felt as if I was just a diversity hire. It’s so sad.

I was a long term syncrude employee who was laid off.
I can’t imagine going to work at site ever again. It wasn’t safe before. Now they have eliminated all the senior staff. Not good.

Suncor pays way less than syncrude. They had to manage that somehow.

I was a contractor at Syncrude until the layoff. I wouldn't personally recommend going back as a contractor unless you have no other option. The attitude towards contractors at Syncrude wasn't perfect but there was a tangible difference once Suncor took over. If your financial situation makes it so that you think going back as a contractor is the best decision, just prepare yourself for condescension (and don't forget to bring your own PC).

Observationally, it appears that Suncor is laying off primarily older workers who cost more in terms of pay and benefits. I have photos to back this up of workers exiting the Hardin Street building in Fort McMurray. They appear to be laying off a lot of expertise from the Syncrude side. The layoffs are being done in a very demoralizing way and sometimes leaders don’t even have the ba--s to show up but dial in on zoom to say “we’ve restructured, your position no longer exists, goodbye,” and then they are left with a very junior HR rep to go over their “package.” Suncor is a terrible company right now- they have even refused to do a Better Place to Work survey this year as they know the results would be terrible. Will a union move over to Syncrude now with morale so low? A high possibility I would suspect. Suncor you have stopped caring about the community and it’s people you make billions off of. Shame on you.
