Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Why worry about layoffs?

Cigna hasn't been a good place to work in a while. If I were to be laid off, I'd consider it a blessing in disguise. I might be too scared to just up and quit, but getting severance would soften the blow significantly. In all honesty, if I could volunteer, I would without a second thought.

Why worry? The job market is extrememly tight right now. I just started a new job (outside of Cigna) a few weeks ago and it took me 6 months to find it. I could see all this coming so I started looking right around the time I got the word that I'd have to start commuting to an office for no reason whatsoever. Good luck. It's not pretty out there right now. Especailly in healthcare.

I'm worried sick. The job market is terrible right now. I'm a single mother. At my age, I am not a good candidate to start something new. If I lost this job, honestly I would be in a very bad place with my mental health. Not sure I could recover.

If you are on the Medicare side of things you might want to start applying to other places in the event Cigna sells.

in reply: Contractors do not get paid more than Cigna employees. A lot of us aren't even getting health insurance either.

I think usually contractors are paid more than FTE because they don't have insurance.

I agree with OP though. I would rather get laid off because anyone that is left will be doing more work and stressing more with no extra money.

Contractor’s don’t get severance but their salary is higher than FTE.. I agree it’s tough time and job search is stressful..

Contractors don't get severance or any other benefits from being laid off.

Job searching is stressful.

It's a very expensive time of year.

I’m praying for severance and to get out of this toxic environment. This is not the Cigna I used to know. It’s almost abuse now.

I agree, I've been applying to other jobs and I sometimes think to myself how awesome it would be to be laid off with a severance and the offered a new job shortly after. It would be like a great bonus.

It's not just tech people for whom that's a problem.

Yes, there is a severance when you're laid off but doing a job search with that ticking clock knowing that you need to find a new job by a certain date is stressful. Remember that a majority of Americans don't have the money saved to live past severance. Most of us are a medical emergency away from bankruptcy. So yeah, a layoff even from a company that isn't great is a worry. Better to have the income AND job search. Best would be to have interviews with potential incoming offers and then get laid off - collect that severance and collect a new income. But the job market su-ks for many of us.

Honestly, it's not any worse for tech. Cigna has a way to silo your skills, and I am sure you can offer much more than what you were doing at Cigna. Trust me, you'll be fine, just prepare and be ready. Good luck!

For tech people it’s harder because the market is bad for tech hires. I can’t speak for other positions though
