Work Related Stress At EM

Hey guys,

I recently joined the Upstream EM company as a new grad straight out of school. Being a naive college grad i was super excited to join EM as its often "bench-marked" in my school as the top long term employer to join and stay with for 40 years.

Very quickly i realized that this place is a dumpster fire on steroids. WTF are PIPs man.......such a archaic way to approach the issue. Instead of using freaking fear as a way to promote productivity.....why not use like bonuses or whatever to promote productivity. Eff this.....constantly under stress from supervisor and "senior-engineer" to perform well. Supervisor is he-l bent on feeding me sh-t like i will be the next CEO if i work hard etc etc....and senior engineer keeps slapping tasks on me that i dont know how to do and when i make a mistake i get ripped a new one.

PIP me i dont even fcking care. Done my rant !!

There’s no more “primrose path” even for the chosen ones. Look on LI and see a bunch of “high potential” people who have been just PIPed because their jobs have to move to BCT. The pie is shrinking and even the high potential parasites are in the Hunger Games now.

Find a therapist in network with our insurance and go. It’s relatively cheap and we all need the support.

@2ryo They’re not stealing your jobs guy.

Your douchebag bosses are giving them away. From a cost perspective they have a point. Why would I pay you $200k/year to edit purchase specs when I can get three people in India with (maybe) 30% of your ability to do it for 20% of the cost? Between the three of them I get 90% of what I’d get from you for 80% less. Tell me that you wouldn’t do the same thing.

I finally gave in and went to a therapist. One of the first questions I asked: am I alone doing this? Blunt answer, they see many people from xom. The rate has increased since the pandemic and continues. It's not cheap, but I suggest if you're dealing with these pressures, seek the help. Your own wellbeing and your family's depends on it.

I recently went to a therapist for work related stress and a panic attack. My therapist has several clients from EM and asked me what the he-l is going on over there 🤣

If you ask me it is the ranking system that is incredibly biased, it rewards a-s kissing and agreeableness more than quality of work. And there is nothing. You. Can. Do. About it BECAUSE the people who have been put in charge are, surprise, the yesmen.

OP - Welcome to the Exxon culture. Think of it like hazing. They identify HiPos very early and evaluate potential for first 5 years. IF you survive the 5 years you'll either be on the primrose path or join the masses who didn't make the cut and do the heavy day to day lifting. If they out and out just don't like you for some reason you'll simply be gone within first 5 years. It's a very well known and accepted phenomena that some new hires think it's a BS system and have better things to do. You won't break anyone's heart if you choose to leave. It's just the Exxon way.

@2kra+1pjcoP5O It's so gratifying when people like you expose themselves for the fools they are! Exxonmobil is making ungodly amounts of money and you suggests the employees take self imposed cuts in pay. The pay that Exxonmobil agreed to pay them! That Exxonmobil offered to them! God cannot help how re--rded you are or maybe you are19 just part of the brainwashed population.

Calling low cost countries scab shows that you are:

  • a neanderthal
  • low IQ
  • probably a racist

If you don't want these low cost countries to "steal" your job, then volunteer to cut your salary to bring the cost down to the company. How about that? I don't know about you, but I'm going to keep rolling on my Mercedes and go with the flow.

Calling your coworkers in low cost country scabs shows (a) you don’t know who is actually to blame for this (hint, not low level employees), and (b) that it will continue to go this way primarily because you’ve misdiagnosed it and you’re stoopid.

You think some kid in India is going to give up a good living (for that country) because you’re being an ahole? Grow up.

Spoiler Alert: You don’t have to work for XOM. I have been here +25 years and still enjoy my job. I am certain there would be aspects of the company I would change if I could but I do what I can. I am certain that many of the folks responding on this topic negatively would probably be just as miserable anywhere else. By all means please take your invaluable skills elsewhere and spare us the complaining. Use your vast knowledge and start your own company. What a miserable lot…..

@1fmj+1pjcoP5O the kid is right! Been in the business 40 years and I have never seen a major more hateful, spiteful, disrespectful, demeaning and abusive to their employees! I am certain there are plenty of younger people that do not mind hard work. Work isn't the issue the hatred, disrespect and complete lack of a shred of loyalty in any shape or form is the issue! Sc--w LOW COST COUNTRIES AND SCABS! SC--W WORKING FOR A COMPANY THAT DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING OTHER THAN FEAR MONGERING AND PITTING EVERYONE AGAINST EACH OTHER! SOUNDS IDENTICAL TO OUR CURRENT POLITICIANS! LOW COST COUNTRIES LIKE BTC ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS!

Don't stress too much. You're actually in a good position for a new grad. You're being paid well and getting to see what it's like inside the corporate environment of a super major. Keep your resume polished, seek opportunities internally that will give you marketable skills, and always be keeping your eye on the job market. If you're in an area were you're only learning BS skills that don't matter outside the market. Asked to be move to a new role that will give you those skills. Don't make the mistake a lot of these seniors who thought they would be here for 40 years made. Exxon has only three goals: (1) Profit (2) Profit and (3) Profit. You and every engineer is cost that they will aggressively try to reduce. Your biggest mistake right now is getting comfortable and stagnant. Exxon doesn't give a single F about you. Keep your skills sharp and be prepared to leave at any moment. That's how you survive.

It’s that old school conservative mentality, dominate and control every part of a workers life, strip away your pride and humanity. They won’t be happy until they can tell you what color shirt to wear.

OP, I'm really sorry that you were fooled by the ExxonMobil HR propaganda cr-p. But, you're young. You can recover. You must start looking for another job right this minute. ExxonMobil hires new grads and staff in general just to put them in the lowest ranking groups to protect the chosen ones. It has nothing to do with your performance, HR needs somebody to take the fall to protect the chosen ones. Also your job will be sent to India soon so you'll be fired anyway. Get your resume in order and start applying for jobs. That's the best advice I can give you.

Learn to eat live and breath the PADP process. Make sure every task you say yes to will maximize your ranking. Nothing else matters. Don't listen to anyone blabbering about collaboration. I guarantee you that no one cares how "helpful" you were to others during ranking. What did YOU deliver? How much did YOU do? Getting the hint?
