Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Pioneer Questions

Good morning,

I don't even know if I'll be getting an offer to join the Exon team, but I have a few questions anyways.

Do you all have Vanguard? (401K transferring over)

How is the health insurance? (At Pioneer the basic package requires zero payment including all family members)

Work Hours (We do 9 hour days Mon-Thurs and 4 hours on Friday) I love that schedule and will be sad if I got to stay until 5 on Friday.

If you want to vent, please do it on other post. Just looking for a little insight.

What is the best advice you can give to all Pioneer employees?

I can't believe I saw serious posts for once on this site. Too bad we can't get rid of the trolls but the world does need ditch-diggers.

It will be all good if you have a defined role with clear goals. Just get out of the campus to the work sites as often as possible. Better yet will be to be in an Operations role when they start "integrating" a year from now.

EM does do 9 hours per day and half on Friday’s, but I wish they did.

All depends on what the deal is, the deltas with your current benefits, and where you are in your career.

If you can pick up pension credit without having to commit to staying for a long time with ExxonMobil, it may be worth taking the offer.

If you work in the Dallas office, expect to have to move down to Houston at some point to stay with the company.

The 401k options are very, very limited. Basically just a few funds which track the S&P 500, Total Stock Market, International Stock Market, and Bond Market.

The health insurance has good coverage, but it's going to cost you more.

On the plus side, if you have more than 5 years of experience, vacation time may go up.

Work life balance seems to vary by role, work group, and personal ambition.

I'm an experienced hire who worked for oilfield service companies. Still better than those companies, but ExxonMobil is also actively moving to be more like them so not as good as when I joined 5-8 years ago. When I joined, I thought that it would be the company that I could retire from. Now I know that it's highly unlikely to be since ExxonMobil is trying to be more like other large companies where college hire to retire careers are more the exception than the rule.

Get used to no Fridays off, no bonus, but the hope of a pension

So if you decline the offer, and then what? Like would they offer you a severance?

Being a former XTO employee and a XOM retiree. I'd decline the offer if one is presented to you. At one time I would have said to take the job, but not now.

@slo What do the office-types do that requires 50-60 hrs per week? The process facilities I can see, but the REs/RIPs sitting in Spring might do 60 hrs of work per year at most.

@OP There’s a lot of disgruntled senior employees still working at EM, so get ready to put up with constant whining about everything from how the office is set up to how the CEO dresses. It wasn’t long ago that people here were saying that hot-desking impinges upon their human rights (really). Their goal is to make everyone else as miserable as they are. Tune it out, collect your paycheck, and go home. At the end of the day it’s just a job.

Too bad coming over to XOM is going to be traumatic, sorry bro

I was XTO and was in similar situation when we got bought in 2010. They will likely keep your pay/benefits same for a year post-close. Then they will convert you to the XOM comp/benefits structure. Your base pay will almost certainly grow (likely substantially) to account for your delta in base pay averages compared to XOM workers, higher benefits costs, etc. You’ll get good 401k matching, and then the pension is solid (especially for younger/mid-career employees…. And assuming we keep it long-term). As
Someone who has been through this before, you’ll be happy with the pay/benefits. It will all work out financially. From a work-life balance perspective, half the company bounces after lunch on Fridays. Will it be as ‘family oriented’ as you have now? Nah. Again, having worked at XTO, there were limited opps for promotions there because you had smaller work groups with people who stayed 30-35 years and promoted within departments. You’ll have more opportunities to advance, bounce around, etc. Will it be tough? Yep. Will you enjoy it? Depend on your perspective? Are there politics? Yep (just like you already have). Does our assessment process su-k? Yep. Will it destroy your career? Nah. Relax, go with the flow, don’t fight it too much if you want to stay on and have a good career. Cheers!

PXD 401k fees are a flat $53/year with Vanguard, I bet y’all are getting boned by Voya

The 401k is Voya and our fees will be lower than what you currently have no doubt. The health insurance costs will be updated on Wednesday but Pioneer is likely better. For work schedule it depends on career aspirations and desires to be ranked above good. Most folks work 45-50 hrs per week; top performers work 60+ per week. Welcome to WAEM

401k is through Voya.

Health insurance premiums feel high - with the discount for participating in the Culture of Health program, the family rate is about $250-$550/month depending on what plan you pick and where you live.

Most office people work a normal schedule of 8 hours a day, including Fridays. Sorry that this transition is going to su-k for you.
