I was so scared before the last round of layoffs but now I realize I should have been petrified of what would come after. Somebody has to do the work left behind by those who were cut and in so many cases that somebody is me. I'm tired all the time. I'm at the point where I'm considering quitting. This is not sustainable.

Sell your RSUs now and you can buy 10 surfboards. Hold your RSUs for 10 years and then you can buy 1 surfboard.

The RSUs were a joke as well. Dogshit stock worth < 1/4 what it was with my initial award
It is very rare to get the $5K bonus. Also not many people get the RSUs. Like someone else said, more common would be the $100 treat yourself to a nice dinner award, which is laughable. Unlike other companies where a 10% year end bonus might be typical.
I was laid off back in March 2023. I count my lucky stars that I was able to find employment in a timely manner.
I cannot speak for other roles, but I believe I was underpaid as a Software Engineer. My overall compensation (at the new job) has increased by 50%. That is not a small amount. And, no, I do not currently work at a Silicon Valley tech company, Amazon, Microsoft, or a fancy bank/financial services company.
Sometimes the answer is simple. I don't need multivariable calculus to see that they paid me below market value for many years.
Was anybody getting bonuses? Every once in a while I'd get some RSUs that never amounted to much or on rare occaisions enough cash for a nice night out with the family.
As far as I knew bonuses just weren't a part of Viasat unless you're an exexutive.
Honestly Viasat had the best health coverage that I ever had. I started at Viasat after working at Fortune 500 semiconductor company and now I'm at a RF defense contractor and it's night and day for my healthcare bills. I'm missing the unlimited PT and low co-pays for my dependents who have higher than average healthcare needs.
If you're healthy or are lucky enough to jump to a big silicon valley firm you might not notice.
I echo the comment that Viasat does not pay well and has average benefits. I voluntarily left Viasat earlier this year. My salary did not increase significantly, but my bonus potential did. Additionally, my new firm not only contributes to my 401k biweekly, the contributions are immediately vested at 100% (Viasat only contributes to a 401k annually and there is a waiting period for an employee to be 100% vested).
To whomever said Viasat doesn't pay well and benefits are average, you seriously live in a glass bubble. Just wait until you are on the other side like me.

Everybody's situation is different, but in the end job satisfactiin is pretty important for happiness. Everything hasn't settled out yet, but I think I'm going to be happy I was layed off. Look for something else if you're not happy. Study what you want to do. Don't give up.
Do not do anything above and beyond. Do bareeeee minimum. They are free cash flow or losing money or their stock tank to 1dollar is really non of your business. Time to find your new job
Best time to look for a job is when you have a job. I got out with in the last year and one question asked during the interview was "Are you currently employed at Viasat?" because they were aware of the layoffs. I don't know if it matter or not but do not lie because background check did verify this fact.

I was impacted and it really stinks to not have a paycheck. It’s honestly the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me. I’ve interviewed with several places and have been told verbally offers are coming. I’m hoping to have an offer by the 1st of the year. I will probably have to take a significant pay cut to get back into the job market quickly and my commute will probably double if not triple.
Yes it stinks with the extra workload but Viasat pays well and has great benefits. Definitely look after the first of the year and don’t wait like I did until it’s too late.
I understand your intent, but in the long run it's better to be employed looking for the next job than not. I'm also staring down incredible gaps to fill with just myself. Don't judge yourself or get yourself down bc some executive fools created unsustainable situations. They su-k, you don't, and you just look out for you.
Doesn't compare to the stress and anxiety involved in trying to nail an interview when your family's livelihood is on the line. You can look for a job at your leisure.
You're not alone, plenty of people are now facing the same thing being forced to pick up the slack. It su-ks but I would suggest trying to hold out until around February. The job market is just awful right now and layoffs are rampant everywhere else as well. Feb/Mar is usually when the dust settles and places start hiring again after the holiday/layoff season. You'd also be slipping out before the next round of RIF we all know is happening in April.
If your responsibilities have increased but not your pay then you should consider your options to change that. I'm not advocating any particular path, it's your life and you know it the best.
