Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Loyalty su-ks

Just a quick 5 min zoom and a very long career is over. Even after serving my entire career, running a very large team, building software, minting $100+ Million in YOY revenue and I still could not afford a house. Stuck with legacy technology knowledge no one wants in other companies with age that's discriminated in tech companies.

I am feeling like biggest fool now and learned loyalty never pays.

Hard Lessons-

  • Self serve first. Corporate companies are not your friend. They are there to make money even if US citizens suffer. Cheap outsourced labor will one day take your job anyway.
  • Keep your self relevant by learning market relevant technologies. In today's time, stick to open source technologies. Do not work on proprietary technologies. In case you are stuck, have an exit plan.
  • Do not be lured by false future promises. Stick to what can be compensated in present. No one knows future, not even your boss or his boss.
  • You will be taken advantage of if you allow that t happen. Fight for your rights diplomatically if personal situation allows else have an exit plan ready.
  • Do not stay for more than 2 years in a place unless you see string future growth

Maintain a work life balance. I regret this as time lost will never come back.

  • Try getting side income, you never know when your side hustle will turn out to be life saver.
  • Save as much as you can and invest wisely.

I'm getting out after 15 years and everyone hit the nail on the head. My tech stack was still making dial up sounds so finding a new position was super challenging but finally managed. Loyalty definitely doesn't pay

Seems like you had disagreements or some conflict with your BOSS at ORCL. Even if someone is below average and say YES BOSS on the face, even if you do nothing, you could have easily survived at ORCL. There are hundreds of example of such people in ORCL.

Even if you made whatever millions for ORCL, you cannot upset your BOSS. Its a big NO NO at ORCL. BOSS is GOD at ORCL.

In order to survive any layoff, specially if you unable to change for whatever reason, be an obedient servant and always say Yes BOSS. You are not an employee @ ORCL just a modern slave.

If you are an IC, do not work very hard and enjoy life. Start saying NO to unnecessary demands, extended working hours and weekends. DONT be fooled by promotions @ Oracle. They are the biggest trap. Keep learning relevant open source technologies and get out. I know lot of people making 6x-7x following this strategy.

Vote +1 if u see these scenarios, is it a common trait across the org?

# 5+ yrs as IC with consistent best perf rating & no promotion.
# Mgrs and upper levels getting promotion every other year.
# Mgrs treating ICs like trash, taking credits of their hard work.
# No reasonable raises, bonuses or stock options to IC.
# 90% of the recent layoffs only affected the ICs.
# Favoritism within the team.
# Hiring family/relatives over others.
# If u complain or report any of the above to HR, no actions and just to top it off, u will risk your position in the next layoff.

I spent 20 years at Oracle before being RIFd, and I should have left after 10 max. The longer you’re there, the more stale your skills become. Don’t be foolish into thinking you have a long term career at Oracle. Move on, there are far better companies to work at.

No other company comes even close. The management is made up of zombie-like airheads lacking all logic and all empathy. If someone put a paper bag over their heads they couldn’t find their way out! Seriously, it’s that bad. They can’t figure out how to rate the people under them because they have no clue what they do and have no idea how anything is supposed to be done. Oracle is bizarro-world. I used to think that if I went up the management chain I would eventually find someone who had a clue, but that is not true. There is no one. Clowns managed by even bigger clowns, all of them afraid someone will notice what they are and see past their stupid titles. What a waste of time it was working at Oracle.

It legit seems to be the worst company run by the worst people. I have never read as much terrilble stuff about a company this size. I recently left a well known company and their culture was terrible, but they haven't been around as long as Oracle. It seems like Oracle mgmt just let so many bad things happen over the years that people (the worker bees) accepted the bad behavior and traded it for a paycheck and bennies; I understand that....many have families and such. It's just terrible to see so many people who are hurting, have been hurt and will be hurt. My time at Oracle, like many, was the worst career decision I could've made. While it didn't ruin my life, it sure made me realize how many terrible people are lurking at these companies. Just so many bad actors. The sad part about it, what I felt, was that the bad actors, the sl--e, it was usually the people with the least talent, the least technical skills, the least ability. People who have good skills, who have been in the trenches, they just dont act as bad as these bad actors. It's just sad. I couldn't wake up every morning knowing I was a POS. There are just so many terrible people in mgmt there. It's sad. And the funny thing is they will totally scr-ew you, smile at you, and then say, "sorry, we just can't help you". Even HR. The worst. People with zero morals or empathy. Life is short folks.....you will eventually have to pay a price for what you did.

The younger folks have figured this out. Do the job you were hired for and nothing else. Never give 100%.

Well said. Way to go, a lesson to be learned from younger generation.

There is a reason why the corporate press has been dumping on the Millennials. They have figured out the scam and refuse to play.

I never came across one non manager that said they were proud of their careers at oracle. They’re basically there cause they know they’re outdated. It’s terrible what they’ve done to so many

See the Oracle Doormat Principle. Read it. Study it. It explains all of this.

I was at oracle for 15 years. I worked in one of the GBUs. Absolutely one of the worst decisions and experiences I ever had in my life. I got out and realized everything I had done there and learned, was worthless. The people that stay in the GBU realize that they can’t make it anywhere else. That’s a hard truth they have to swallow.

Be prepared.

I’d recommend updating one or more versions of your resume. One for each role you may seek. Maybe float a few applications to see how it fares.

Add or modernize your skills. Pick up some relevant certs for the roles you might seek.

Review your finances and war game layoff scenarios. What expenses can you reduce quick, what’s your savings runway look like, etc.

Reach out to your network in advance of a potential layoff. Don’t underestimate the value of relationships.

After many years of firing in CX & OCI, profits are not increasing. Its obvious but so called smart people with inflated titles are not able to figure it out at Oracle. LOL

Near zero growth for 90% in US. No personal life. Long working hours and you would gain experience in technologies that will hurt future career, especially in FA.

Strategy is to replace US employees with cheaper resource from other countries. Hope others who are stuck can anticipate or burnout.

No excuse for employee abuse.
To hate employees & customers is beyond everything I was taught in business school, believed and practiced for 30 years. Oracle needs to modernize mgmt.
