Promotions? What are those?! Is that the thing they do when they make you exempt so you can work for free when you aren’t a people leader and then lay you off and not pay you for your vacation?!

Maybe it would be better to ask if ageism is an issue in general.

Age is an issue when getting a raise and not just a promotion. Once you hit 50, your raises are going to be so small. Just wait and see. Hence, make sure you get what you want around here before 50, or you will be seriously disappointed.

I second that being promoted is not all that great. I was promoted to manager and doubled my responsibilities and did not get a raise. I had to threaten to quit 2 years later to get any significant raise. The money I missed out on could have paid for a few years of kids college.

When seeking a promotion (especially the leap from IC -> Mgr)? Yes. When hired from the outside, no. That used to not be true (or as true) but TR has "changed".

I don’t know. Generally older coworkers are few and far between in my business unit. Most who have been promoted are on the younger side. Under 45.

Personally I have turned down promotions here. It’s not worth it for me. The marginal increase in pay is way less than the increase in responsibilities and work.

I’m not here to maximize the benefit for the company. I’m here to maximize the benefits for my family.
