Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

I think I messed up

I've been looking for a new job for a while and I think somehow my manager caught wind of it. I assume one of my current coworkers might have told him (by the way, never tell anybody at the office your plans - I learned that the hard way). I denied it when he asked me about it, but I'm now worried it might end up costing me my current position before I'm ready to leave. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Well a thoughtful manager would sit down with you and have a sincere conversation. Why are you leaving? Is it something we can remedy? What would it take to make you feel better about your role.

Yeah, I know. I'm trying to cut back on the psychedelics.

In addition to keeping quiet about your plans at works, you should keep a work journal. Every day when you get home write down what happened at work. Do this at home in your own handwriting. I know a man who did that for 24 years. His director would be very worried if he knew.

I am your manager and you lied to me.. You will be the first to go and I know who you are.

Correct instinct on not telling anybody at work anything about searching or interviewing. Also, never ask for or accept any counter offer if you plan to accept a new position internal or external. If you take a position, just walk it and say thanks but I'm gone and good luck. Then hand over your badge and computer and walk out and never look back. Don't say another word on it. I think that once you officially interview for an internal job, your manager is notified at that point and will know. Yes, do not even think of doing it unless you already know you want and intend to take the position if offered. If anyone at work asks you if you are satisfied with your job/role always lie and say it's the greatest job you can think of having and are very happy to stay in it and develop and progress to higher levels as the management see's fit. Your more likely for them to "invest" in you further. Fake it until you make it. I don't care if your ready to jump off a cliff if you have to work in it another day. That's my advice.

  • If one looks for a job inside a company, at some point the manager needs to know.
  • If one after this does not move, it becomes dangerous: At the next lay-off, the manager needs to decide who to keep. Probably not the person, who wants to leave the group to move to another group within the same company.

This happened to a friend who looked internally and later lost his job.
I learned from this that internal moves are tricky.

everybody is looking.
I am more concerned that your boss ask this.
this is private, what you do at home.

You must not be a high performer then. High performers don't get fired for leaking that they're looking outside, they get rewarded through retention bonuses.

You're going to get laid off for sure...I kid, its a layoff site. If it was me and Im a terrible liar like LIAR written with a sharpie across my forehead..Id tell him or her you're hearing rumors of a rif, you're a bit worried, bills, kids, college, high end bourbon etc and have been looking around to see whats out there. A solid worried look would be helpful in that moment if you have one....Perhaps you can get some assurances from said manager on where you stand...No info on your age or skill set etc, so thats all I got...good luck, 'generally' the truth will set you free, esp since you already think you're bagged.
