I was part of the 10/20 RIF and have been quiet but this has really been bugging me about Hellavance whole recruiting tactic of "Hire until Retire" when over 3/4 of our RIF was over 50.

BTW HR. Many are also contingent workers! Found that out 2 years ago while interviewing candidates….

Whoever is in their 20s and 30s are frustrated given their stage of life with lower income given their experience, possibly student loan debt, possibly a new mortgage or unable to obtain one given housing prices, and maybe even costs associated with starting a family. Once they're over 40, they'll began to see that despite making more money, they still have those payments, plus more if they have a family or are caretakers to anyone, plus saving for retirement comes further into focus. It does not get easier. When you're RIF'd over 40, the company may also send you (without warning) paperwork that details how they're not discriminating against you this one round with a list of people with your same job title regardless of where that job is in the company. That list only shows the title, the age of the person, and whether or not their job was eliminated in the RIF. The company sends you this because they know they're guilty for age discrimination land are continually sued for it, among other EEOC violations, like other forms of discrimination, a hostile work environment, s-xual harassment, etc. if you're under 40, you may not be aware of everything that happens in the workplace post-40 because they would not need to be on your radar, nor would the laws put in place as protections because these age-related issues are very real. You'll definitely start to see it when you are passed over for promotion for someone younger with less experience either outside the company or country because they're cheaper upfront than bringing you up to market rate given your depth of experience, knowledge and hard earned skills.
@7eho+1pAoxEp1 I feel bad for all the RIF'd individuals regardless of age or tenure. However the hard cold reality is with individuals who were with the company 15-20 years -- going back on the market is going to be all that much more difficult compared to people who have been on the job market recently. For individuals in their 50s -- the RIF is a harder slap in the face because these individuals will have (a) tougher time finding a new job. (b) are not typically financially or otherwise ready to retire, (c) may have substantial financial commitments tied to college age kids or aging parents. Again though I feel bad for all the RIF'd individuals and your post is just lashing out against the wrong people for no reason.
@7eho+1pAoxEp1. Who on this thread purported to be a victim of their age? Newsflash: Everyone gets older...there is nothing to be done about it; no way to prevent it. Yes, people on these threads might feel they are victims of age discrimination, which is illegal but hard to prove. Regarding your comment about people who were 'spoiled' by good wages that is like an ironic joke. People who dedicated years or in some cases decades of hard work at a company deserve to be paid fairly. In my case yes I was at the top of my range.... but the people at the top of the corporate food chain are being paid tens of millions. I wasn't making that kind of money.
And it isn't like the $15-20K or so they are saving on replacing me is going to make a dent. In fact saving $20K on all 5000 of the RIF'd people by replacing them with younger cheaper and/or outsourced employees will cover less than half the bonus pool of that elite inner circle. They are going to need a few more tricks up their sleeve to keep those millions rolling in.
i was rifd 10/20 as well. i am in my 30s, and the other person from my team who was rifd was in his/her 20s. while it's probably true they targeted people with higher pay, that would also tend to be older employees. gen x and boomers were spoiled by high wages and standards of living which were, and are forever, out of reach of those younger than them. it's cathartic to commiserate with others here, but you likely aren't victims to your age. you are victims of a system which can and will only enrich those who have no morals, a cutthroat attitude, and most of all, the capital to subjugate all of us.
By law they are supposed to give you a list of people laid off and ages in your "department"... never got it. They rif a few younger folks to make it look "across the board" when really it's an over 50 house cleaning. They did a lot of unethical things. I'm over 60 (which I don't think they knew until rif time) also a very short term employee and they hired a younger person a few months before my rif as my replacement. I did what I thought was a good job in a messed up department but just wasn't part of the club. Scary now how I am going to make a living. Hope Karma is true....
I was let go in July this year over 50 as well. Alot of the people in my group were same age group with long tenure. Our RIF was hush hush. However it was the BEST thing that ever happened to me. I found another position with tons of perks- cheaper benefits, equity and a Holiday party ! And Bonus Full-time work from home.
They actually told you 'hire until retire'? That is LAUGHABLE. This place is known for laying people off in their 50s a cool decade before retirement age. And being ageism is very real most end up retiring with well below their lifetime earning potential. I could name easily 15 people right off the top of my head without even thinking that they did this to. I also know a few people who were out on short term disability for cancer treatment and other serious ailments who were laid off while laying in a hospital bed. ¡Puro basura!
RIF 10/20 in 60s
It's my 11th anniversary from being let go from Anthem in 2012. I'm sorry to see not much has changed. 50+ years old, 10+ years of experience still seems to be a ticket to ride.
Looks like November is still a "popular" month. My day was the last payday before Thanksgiving.
Keep the faith. There's life after Anthem.
All companies want to boot over 50. We make way more than a 27-45 year old. Ageism is very real.
I have discovered employer offer letters mean nothing these days. They may meet the salary and other conditions for the first few months, but after that, it is like the offer letter which I used to consider a contract and meant something is now total BS. My offer letter from Anthem/EH stated my AIP would be 15%. After two years, a new resource manager lowered it to 12.5% with no notification nor explanation. Then I was reorged to another manager a year later who changed my AIP back up to 15% as stated in the job offer letter. They do whatever they want to you once they have you hired into the company. Beware!!!
Everyone I know who was part of the RIF (other than me) was over 50. I am in my late 30s and think I was part of RIF bc I was hired for a demanding position in the middle of COVID that has since been divided into two positions. I was E18 with AIP of 22.5 where they are now hiring for E13 and 12.5AIP. My thought is that I was included in RIF bc I was 50+ miles from PP and hired at a higher level and they replace me with 2 lower level positions.
My offer letter stated that I was guaranteed a severance if "blah, blah, blah". Which was essentially denied since I was part of the RIF and not "blah, blah, blah" reason as was listed in offer letter. So now, having to jump through all the hoops my state unemployment office requires. Its just humiliating.
I am over 50 also. It took an email to that HR address for them to resubmit my stuff to the sub pay place and thankfully that worked. Did you contact HRSupport@elevancehealth? That is who I wrote about my sub pay because calling that number was useless
I was 10/20, over 50.
Also, everything I submitted by miracle wasn't received and has to be resubmitted again. Not a single dollar yet of my severance. Even the laptop was "lost" thank god I saved my receipt from the UPS store.

Do I have actual numbers? No, but EVERYONE(and there were MANY) were over 50. Only about 20 were not
Just curious - how do you know 3/4 of the RIF was >50? Anecdotally -- I know the RIF'd individuals tended to be older but was wondering if anyone has actual numbers.
