Support Engineers Unionize!

No raises, no chance of advancement, and no support from the products we are supporting. Managers are incompetent. Directors are worse. VPs and above are raking it in while we wallow in the mud. New hires straight out of college are getting RSUs and are getting paid more than those of us that have been here for years.

No need to unionize. Just get the he-l out of there. Look elsewhere, there’s so many companies paying much better and doesn’t treat their employees sh. Don’t be like a deer caught in the headlights. Remember your loyalty to yourself and family comes first, the company always last.

Spoken from a true deflector:

it's a reality. otherwise, half of Europe would have Software Engineering unions. it's not just the North America which doesn't have those. there is no pressing need, yet, and there is no response. something tells me that Software Engineers have way more technical capabilities to organize a union than a factory floor workers, we are just not desperate enough.
VFX specialists in Hollywood are pushed to desperation, and they are organizing.

Spoken from a true deflector:

there is a good reason why there are no unions for software engineers anywhere in the world. software engineers are effectively on the level of junior management in terms of ability to withstand against pressure from higher management and options available to us.

notable exceptions are "software engineers" in standard sweatshops in niche industries and roles - VFX and game development, they need to unionize.

I'm pro union, I'm also 'ultra conservative '. Until people stop playing the game of condemning anyone who doesn't hold the same opinion they do, a united front can't happen. I have relationships with a Union and interesing enough, a majority of members are 'ultra conservative, maga' types. Don't be fooled, it's the corrupt high ups and politicians on all sides who make unions look bad and create turmoil for their own benefit.
To be successful In unionizing you have to put aside petty banter and actually learn how to listen.

I don’t disagree. Problem is that people are ignorant about organizing and unions from 40 years of anti union laws and sentiment. Yet we are seeing these past years that organized labor is roaring back. UPS, the auto industry, SAG, just some of the examples.

So first you need leverage. That’s going to be tough bc companies purposely keep you weak, esp O. Also decades of offshoring, outsourcing, right sizing you get the idea.

Which tech community has leverage? Start with them. Maybe the highly skilled developers and software Eng. MAYBE the security tech community. They sort of have the industry by the short hairs.

Problem is the majority of the peoples I know who do those jobs are raging ultra conservatives and MAGAs. The thought of a labor union sends them into a screaming anti labor screed. I’ve seen and heard this. Bet you have too. OK sometimes I’d egg them on because it’s so amusing when the day is long and boring 😄

Uphill battle doesn’t even begin to describe the forces that would be brought to bear against such a movement. Of course to some that’s just an invitation. I hope, for the techies of the future.
