Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Give yourself a Severance Package

At the beginning of 2023 I decided this would be my last year working at Dell. If I couldn't get to be part of a WFR I would give myself a Severance package.

After reviewing the Severance package information I found on Inside Dell I learned that the standard is 2 months Salary, 1 week for each year worked, 75% of bonus and 2 months Cobra (this is an example for the U.S. Based workforce, others can use a similar workflow based on what is the policy in your region).

After determining my $$ for 2 months Salary and my 1 week for each year worked I determined that that I would reach that in early June. Next I determined my 75% of prorated Bonus and that brought me to Middle of July and 2 months of Health care ($700 a month) brought me to a date of the end of July where I had made an Salary equivalent to a WFR package.

At the end of July I would have made enough money to be approximate what I would get in a WFR.

So early July I contacted my Manager and said I wanted to work out an exit strategy. My Manager said to let them think about it and a few minutes later the VP of my group called and asked if I could stay until September and be part of a WFR. (I'm not sure if I was already selected or was going to replace someone else, regardless YAY!!)

This was mega bonus. But if they had come back and said there was nothing they could have done I would have left at the end of July and been as happy as I am now having left as part of a WFR.

I'm just throwing this out there as a way to look at it. I hear so many saying that they want to leave, maybe this gives you a way to think about how to plan it if you are not selected for a WFR.

I still unclear as what you did. Did you save extra money to allow for yourself to take time off?

I kind of did something similar, I asked my manager for a package, didn't hear for a while, but I got it. I could not be happier, I had a lot of years, coming from EMC. My advice is to ask for a package before xmas. I am pretty sure another WFR will happen at the end of the year. Start looking for a job now, intending to have one in 3-4 months. A lot of companies stop/slow hiring at the end of the year - but will pick it back up at beginning of new calendar year. Economy is not super great, but it is not awful, I think it will slowly improve next year. Might as well get paid to leave. If you have any interest in leaving Dell, do it. Awful company, having interviewed a lot lately - Dell is pretty bad. Benefits alone are not good compared to what I have seen. I was paying $700/month - I had people laugh when I told them that.

Similarly, at the beginning of 2020, I realized that I had reached my limit at Dell. Decided that I would leave at the end of April. Well along came Covid and I decided to see how long I could endure the new normal. By the end of July was ready, again, to drop a resignation. Hesitated, and was rewarded by being in the first round of WFRs in August.

Never looked back!

Confused. So you worked half the year to save up to a severance package?
