Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Things to know

My heart sincerely goes out to those of you who have been impacted. I was laid off during a previous ‘round’ several years back during Covid, and let me first say I personally know how you are feeling … it is completely eviscerating. The only piece(s) of advice I can give you are this:

It’s okay to feel numb; it’s okay to be blindingly angry; it’s okay to be in shock; it’s okay to cry … but, it is NOT okay to be unprofessional. It is NOT okay to lash out at leadership and/or HR. As much as you want to, it is also NOT okay for you to take to social media and talk negatively about the company. And, finally, it is NOT okay stop being productive (as hard as that sounds). Now, let me explain …

IF you were fortunate enough to receive a severance package, you need to understand Centene will be watching and listening and is looking for ANY reason to not pay you that money. Don’t give them that satisfaction. Your severance will be paid out once you complete your ‘agreed upon’ LAST day of employment (and that’s only if you haven’t already been rehired in the organization, basically meaning if you have another Centene job lined up, you get no severance. If you When you sign your severance package paperwork, you are essentially agreeing to conduct yourself in a professional manner, continue to transition your duties accordingly and leave with a pep in your step … and if you don’t, you forfeit your right to a severance. They can terminate your agreement and employment for ANY cause.

Also, pay attention to the fine print in those severance packages — you may wind up having to give back a certain amount of monies paid out in the event you land a job back at Centene within a certain timeframe. Read your agreement, and read it again … and again … and again, no matter how depressing it seems. Understand the options and programs at your disposal and use them.

And finally network! Don’t be shy — reach out to EVERYONE, anyone — let them know you’ve been impacted and see if there’s a spot for you on their team; that is if you even want to continue working for Centene. Remember, layoffs happen everywhere, at any time, usually in a way that completely blindsides everyone.

Hold your head up; this is just a small part of the universe and you WILL get through this. ♥️

Something to think about for those to receive large severance checks. You might want to delay receiving your severance until January because of the tax implications. Personally I won't sign my release required to receive severance until after the new year. I'd rather push that income into next year. We have 45 days to sign which means you'll have about 2 weeks to get that done. That may not be an option for everyone but if you can survive to the end of the year without a check it may behove you to do so.

Also, I strongly disagree anyone is looking for a reason to take your severance. The potential for the company to be sued millions to save a few thousand... it simply wouldn't be worth the risk unless you did something extremely damaging.

The company didn't have to give us 2 months notice and they certainly didn't have to pay us severance. Be respectful on your way out.
