SMIC never made any announcement. This was revealed during Huawei smartphone teardown. China is very close to capturing the entire supply chain.
This wave of announcement from China is probably pushed by the Western chip companies for selling to China as before the restrictions. In reality, nobody can do anything independent of the IC supply chain, which covers things from filters to masks to solvents to dopant.
Duplicating everything would take decades with enormous amount of money and know how.
SMIC is technically ahead of Intel in Logic right now. And YMTC is ahead of Micron and everyone else in NVM. CXMT is also up-to something big. And they achieved all these with all the restrictions. It's curtains for the American way of life. It is time to start learning Mandarin.
