Thread regarding USAA layoffs

For those who have been laid off or accepted a new job offer.

I was impacted by the recent layoffs. I am hoping to find a good company with a splendid work atmosphere and benefits. Any leads on companies to apply to in San Antonio?

If possible, keep the USAA income flow. If it is just getting too difficult, there is another thread on this site about getting a medical leave of absence. As that poster said so well, this is just a machine. So learn to use it for your advantage. If even that fails, assess your lifestyle. Make cuts, and then take a good look at how long you can be out of the market and still meet your obligations.

One thing to not do: expend any extra energy on USAA. If they have you on a PIP, evaluate whether you must waste any further time on USAA. When in lowered spirits, wise energy placement is vital to make it through all this USAA garbage.

On your free time, totally and completely stop thinking about the USAA cesspool. Exercise, and if you are not exercising, do it! It is directly linked to your mental health. Improve your diet, and take a class that solely benefits you. Stick to it!

I did it and totally glad I walked. I am now back to my old self and my ex-employer!

San Antonio is a weak job market relative to tech. Austin was smarter than Cisneros back in the 80s, and SA was left behind. He focused on the Alamodome, Austin focused on IT. We are left with HEB, Oil, and tourism. Min wage jobs and lawn cutting services. Don't be surprised if there is a large merger or sale with USAA. A few M&A job postings the last 18 months. How else can Wayne make money off the membership? That when real layoffs happen. He has benefits from the Real Estate sale and selling off FASG elements.

Sorry mate I’m not in San Antonio and I don’t know your specific skill set. Start looking around - there is a lot out there.

I’ve wondered about Security Service, Broadway Bank and RBFCU. All have good reputations in the industry. Credit Human, not so much.

I am asking professionals for advice on future employment opportunities. Isn't that what this site is for? I am trying to find an excellent work environment outside of USAA. People are happy with their careers all over this world. I am looking for those type of leads to assist in my job search. Not understanding your negativity.

I left voluntarily for greener pastures fairly recently. My best advice: get your resume in good shape, your LinkedIn profile sharp, sign up for LinkedIn premium (it’s free for a month if you don’t want to spend $), and apply. LinkedIn is an amazing resource. You can set up alerts for position, type (in office, hybrid, remote), salary range, experience level, etc. don’t shy away from working with recruiters, but don’t be passive and apply yourself. If you are open to remote, your options are not limited to San Antonio.

I personally ended up with 2 offers, both 100% remote, both promotions from my level at usaa, both better pay (either base or base + bonus combo), both better or equal benefit packages as USAA. I ended up choosing the one I thought would give me a better chance at long term career growth. I’m happy with my choice now I’ve been with the new employer for a little bit and am completely happy I’m out of that toxic environment.

Good luck to you! Don’t despair and be patient, it’s a process, but we’ll worth it in the end!
