Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Usaa cites “health” as being a reason for the large exodus ……

They omitted a crucial term: "mental."

Six of my fellow teammates departed, and each attributed their departure to "mental health" among their reasons for leaving.

USAA, it's time to step it up.

I commend those who made the choice to depart, prioritizing their well-being.

USAA did take a step forward by enhancing our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefits, extending the provision of free counseling sessions from 5 to 10. That's a positive development but still not enough.

Mental health can affect you physically. Lack of sleep. Nausea. Everything associated with addiction (using dr-gs and alcohol to cope). I am grateful it hasn't impacted me even worse - yet

I wonder if the EAP contractor is allowed to “group” the issues that they’re hearing about and report that info back to USAA management. Not to get any EEs into trouble obviously, and nothing that would affect HIPPA regulations.

But maybe that might get management and/or the board members to see any trends the counselors are seeing.

My EAP therapist was really great and he said “let’s think about this. You come here because of the stress of your job, but you leave here after an hour to return to the very thing that brings you here”. EAP is helpful for your life when you aren’t at work, but unless the work itself changes (majorly changes) the EAP is just a bandaid solution to keep people from completely losing their sanity; it just provides validation that they are under undue stress and that things shouldn’t be so hard.

I left because it was never going to get any better. And no amount of EAP could fix it. And clearly it hasn’t

Does the EAP provide access to counselors who honestly acknowledge that the currently fashionable corporate myths about DEI and more generally how to build healthy culture are pure insanity? Because if not then it's not really a benefit.

When your policies, practices, and overall approach to motivating and empowering your employees boils down to trickery, deception, gaslighting, and then shrieking at them, “but you’re so lucky to work here!! Eat your taco, and STFU!!!” it’s time to admit you are a psycho.
