Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Rainbow Diversity BS Company

Since Dell took over, all what counts:

  • diversity bullsh1t talk (yeah, where is the straight white men ERG group?)
  • "YOU have to fix it" attitude - even though no more skilled people or efficient processes are available
  • huge amount of consultants and managers having no clue what they're talking 'bout, because they've never ever touched or have seen a proper enterprise hardware component in reality
  • sell, sell, sell - product quality does not matter at all

Honestly, this company is more than a dead horse - apart from selling cheap notebooks, thin-clients, screens there is not much more. We've totally ignored/missed the evolution to cloud/ansible/container/automation - at the end we're still a over-dimensioned box-moving company with 80% vacuum cleaner sales attituded people.

For all those with appropriate skills and motivation: search for something else, even the pay might be 20-30% less - money is not worth working every day in such a toxic insane company.

For the others: stick calm and get your compensation package.

Another white male here - I started back in 2016 and it was majority white / male. That changed. Hiring became more female and diverse w/ regard to race. Leadership / promotions criteria that included a racial and s-x ratio target was rolled out. I thought that reverse racism. Same as another guy said, I got my job because I knew someone - yes, but he was Asian - male - not a white guy. Introduces me to another Asian, male. He introduces me to his white, male managers. Interview and get a job. The company was probably 80% female at the time and 80% white males. The teams I worked on were progressively more female, and diverse as the years rolled by. Eventually my leadership totem pole went from all white male to a few females, all white, and then later lots of black males and white females until you got closer to the top, where it's basically all white males, as I believe it has stayed, with a token female. When I left I think my team was about at what the current 10K diversity statistics show. Clearly, there was an effort to hire more diverse, and female. And to promote into leadership, more females and non white races. That too seemed bizarre to me as our applicant pool profile hadn't really changed over the years. Our hiring had, though. What I learned was we had a 2030 plan - that has now been seared into the 10K report:

By 2030, 50% of our global workforce and 40% of our global people leaders will be those who self-identify as women.
By 2030, 25% of our U.S. workforce and 15% of our U.S. people leaders will be those who self-identify as Black or African American or as
Hispanic or Latino

So this has some interesting effects.

Namely, combined with a 5% overall population reduction (133,000 globally down to 126350) We end up with a current headcount of 83,790 White population, that goes down to 55,594 but the white male population goes from 54,464 to 27,797 or an appx 50% reduction in white males. What the actual f*ck does that say to me, as a white male?

Females make up only 1/4 of the STEM degrees in this country - this is a technology company, mind you. That hires predominately people with degrees. There is also a 10% difference in the workforce participation rate in females and males. This explains why the applicant pool is not 50% - and yet the mandate is for 50% male to female workforce ratio - this is absurd.

There is only a 13.6% population of blacks in the USA. How does a 25% target make any sense logically ? Or more practically, how are they going to find all of these people, specifically black people, to fill all of these roles ? there would almost have to be a race based hiring campaign. It's complete madness when you consider Lady Justice. Blind.

Where it exists here though, it exists everywhere in our industry. That is to say, a hiring plan that looks very closely at your s-x and race. There will be winners here (most obviously blacks, and especially black females) but there will also be losers (most obviously whites, and especially white males).

It is legal ? Doubtful. Is it happening ? You see it in the f*cking 10K.

Merit should be the only hiring criteria / promotion consideration.

I will leave you with only this - SGA can be reduced further, revenue cannot. Shareholders will replace workers with software when there is margin pressure.

Sue the pants off of these f*ckers for violating Title VII if you catch a bullet.
Learn a skill - use the money to start a business w/ your new skill - hire on merit.

The moment a company goes all woke every layoff, hire, promotion, etc is looked at through the race lense. We are divided because of the toxic leftist ideology that has started the fires of hate. Virtue signaling is nothing more than pandering - these people boasting how inclusive and non marginalizing they are - 100% the biggest offenders. And for those who have the ignorant idea that I would be any friend to the right lol- Wake up - the left and the right are only there to make you feel like you have a choice. Don't get caught up in the division, we all end up dead in the end no survivors. My family is mixed race - all 3 of the major flavors here in AMER (Black,White,Mexican) we see what's up with all the hate and we have to go the extra mile to make sure our mixed race children are not affected by the society we have created. The diversity stuff is a scam and it hurts Black people 10 fold.. just look at what has happened.

"We don’t look out for each other or have a secret handshake. We just want to work and not be bothered. We don’t consider color in our decisions at all."

This is ahistorical. The entire history of the United States show the exact opposite of what you wrote.

Blart: Did the person you know hire you because you are white regardless of your qualifications? Or, did he/she know you had the skills and character to be a good employee (regardless of skin color)? If it’s the latter then no need to feel guilty about it. Hiring is very risky for companies. That’s why the first thing they do is ask existing good employees if they know anyone. It’s also why they pay referral bonuses.

Nobody here is ragging on other groups. We are just pointing out that white men are not the enemy. We don’t look out for each other or have a secret handshake. We just want to work and not be bothered. We don’t consider color in our decisions at all.

Your comment is so virtuous though. I’m impressed what a good person you are.

White male here - I got my job because I knew someone. While I think I’m pretty good it’s not lost on me that I got my foot in the door because I knew another white male and so many others could do my job just as well. Every time there is a layoff people whine about getting the “white male treatment”. Why do you think that is? Could it perhaps be a result of the industry being 99% white male up until like 2015? So now all those old white dudes are getting laid off. It’s just math it’s not race you knuckle head.

AND I’d also add pretty much every black or brown person I’ve met at dell has soooo much passion, super smart, and a top notch personality. Now compare that to all the grumpy white guys I see walking around in frumpy shorts (which is fine) but my point is people of color still have to pass an extra “test” to work at Dell and one I’d guess you wouldn’t pass. So please shut up on that front.

DEI only serves two purposes:

  1. It gives power, influence, and director titles to otherwise worthless, talentless people.
  2. It makes vapid, selfish people feel virtuous.

Both are at the expense of the groups they claim to be helping and the companies they claim to serve.

All these comments talking about physical appearance is coming out of ignorance.
I want to highlight that there are melanin people who have been hired on merit couldnt stay at Dell. They were removed to make space for white male without merit.

But I will always say, more power to the white manager who did it.
It is a blessing to be out of a place that doesnt appreciate merit.
Everyone in the team will lose their job in few months, when the mgr and his team cant provide the results.
It always works out in the end for everyone.
Ultimately everyone gets whatever they are destined for. No one gets extra.
Let us look at the positives.

Just want to say if it wasn't for Michael Dell (a straight white male who started his company out of his garage) your job would never exist. Thank God for straight white males!

Well i dont understand.. why dont you just move on and get a new job if you are that damn talented as you claim to be? Lol clearly you are not and just an angry white man who wants to feel important and entitled. Move on if you are that damn frustrated and I am sure Dell will continue to do better without you. Want to prove them wrong? QUIT!

Yes and no; they have at least re-coded several products to container approach; anyhow you're still right with box moving company - apart from Cyber Recovery (which is just a simple API frontend) there has been 0,000 development in terms of transforming company and business to software-drive/automation.

Most of the vital coding has been outsourced to external Indian companies; so the priorities are clear.

And don't tell me about consulting; haven't seen anyone within Dell being worth called a consultant.

VMware had containers - why dell would need it than?
ansible is everywhere in dell enterprise products - you seem not to know what you saying
cloud is missed trend but that's Tucci decision back in 2010 to relay on Vmware Air Cloud(failed)

if it ain't working for you - change to something else - move on

some have interesting projects , some just complain

As a former EMC then dell employee for close to 30 years I couldn't have said it better. I volunteered for a package and got it months ago. If you don't join some of the ERG's you will get laid off. Can't believe dell solicits money from employees for its own political action committee. This money used to promote dell woke cr-p.
