Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Are Layoffs over?

I know there was a big layoff last Thursday. I am hearing more were this week. Anyone know of more coming? Star ratings were awful. Some expansion of the business has been blocked. Does not sound good.

The storm approaching Tampa is likely to delay at least some notifications planned for this week. If you talk with them enough, you may notice that some leaders have been acting out of character lately. Often that’s a sign of their discomfort with things to come.

None of us ever want to have that conversation with a direct report. It’s terrible.

The new Centene under Sarah lack the honesty and integrity , they operate in the dark , they are shady, they try to portray they are this great best employer, inclusive, caring of disabled, committed to the DEI but on the back they treat you as a cost center, a number, a p&l line, this is the most hypocrisy and lame I have ever seen in a company this size.

I believe in 2021 they purposefully announced upcoming layoffs just before a shareholers meeting, which caused the stock price to go up a little. So when they had the meeting they could show the board the share prices were going up.

They wanted to media to know then to create a buzz for the share prices.

The 2021 3k layoff was widely reported on https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/news/breaking-news/centene-corp-to-slash-3000-jobs-246024.aspx
How are they able to avoid any public information?

They didn't do a Warns notice when they laid off 3,000 people in the beginning of 2021.

I believe if a company gives 60 days notice or 60 days severance the company does not have to do a warns notice.

I always thought of It more of a way to make sure people have a couple of months of income before having to overwhelm a state's unemployment department. And many states don't let a person collect unemployment benefits during the time they have severance pay.

Warns seemed like it was more a warning to the state, we are closing and have no money to pay these people starting immediately.

But, I could be completely way off, just a personal observation after many years of watching corporate layoffs.

savages is right!

Way back in legacy Wellcare days I was part of layoffs, they gave us a couple months heads up, had HR rep to help us look for new positions in the company, but if you choose not to or just didn't find a position then you got severance.

I still just so shocked, severance is just such a normal part of layoffs in any company.

WARN Act is federal law. There aren't "WARN Act states" - some states have their own laws expanding upon it but your theory about moving people to corporate so everyone is bound to Missouri laws doesn't make sense.

Missouri is not a WARN Act state. I'm guessing this is why they moved everyone in Corporate's cost code to Missouri a year or so ago, even though for many of us dont reside in MO.

No, not contractors, FTE’s. It’s been kept quiet because the ones that are let go are given until the end of October to find a job within the company, basically a hostage situation because if you say something they’ll let you go right away, with no shot of being able to be eligible for rehire due to breaching the nda. They are savages and they don’t care about you. Start looking now. I mean it. This is not the end. You’ve been warned, told, given a heads up, etc….

@asri+1oadkKD0 this is my question as well. Those who are saying no severance aren’t disclosing if they were a contractor or FTE.

no severance .... WTF

How is that even possible? I mean maybe for contractors, but FTEs how is that even possible?

Everyone keeps asking "what department is being affected" ALL OF THEM! I know of 8 individuals who all work in different sectors who have been let go. None of us are safe. This isn't the end.

The WARN act won’t apply. They’re super careful about hitting threshold numbers in a given state or location. Check the records. For all the layoffs the company has done, I don’t think they’ve ever had to report one. If they have it was a mass layoff in a single location.

So sorry to hear this happened. Can anyone provide clarity what line of business or departments are being impacted? I'm shocked there hasn't been any communication about this. Wishing all impacted the best.

2k were let go. Called into a last minute meeting, you, your manager and an HRBP… Once the HRBP confirms with whom they are speaking, the manager becomes silent as a church mouse and doesn’t a day a word throughout. I guess they’re told not to engage once they are on the line. No severance, just a thanks for your service but we’re over staffed and need to make tough business decisions and this is one of them. Told you have 30 days to get COBRA and that’s that. Manager hangs up on all and then your access is immediately terminated. All while talking to them, your credentials are being turned off on the side. I guess the manager is relaying to someone from IT I suppose.

The new Centene is just feel like parasite socialist government, all pretty and nice on the facade, flaunting dei, culture and a bunch of good deeds , executives making millions,in the real world, good teams being dismantled, lot of senseless layoffs ,poorly made decisions with people in position they shouldn't be, unqualified CEO that main merit is being a poet essay writer. Wonder why things will not get better any time soon.

My supervisor for the last 2 years had always been very open, attentive, direct and easy going. Since the layoffs I've noticed she cancels team huddles, 1 on 1s and is never available to chat. Naturally I knew something was up. This morning I log into my computer to see an email for a 1on1, my heart dropped. My 1 on 1 have always been on Tuesdays. Welp today I learned that I have been let go with no severance packet. They told me that I can use up all of my remaining PTO & sick days. I'm saddened but something better is out there.

Unfortunately i was one of hundreds who was notified that our positions would end on October 6, 2023. Completely random and out of the blue. It couldn't of come at a worse time. I wish all of those others who are now scrambling the best of luck.

I've been with this company for 5 years and have survived 3 large layoffs. Luckily I'm still here but this is extremally unsettling.

What about admins?

Yes, this is far from how they did RIF’s previously.. something is very odd and different this time around and yes, there were 15 managers invited to a call and let go, then there was a small group invited, roughly 3 managers and a director, and were told they are safe. I was only given this information because I have been poking around to see if I will be impacted since I am in a leadership role and keep hearing about random layoffs here and there…. Not the typical style for a Fortune 500 company but seriously, they are doing this low key, under the radar and it won’t be long before the wave at the end of Friday doesn’t scare the cr-p out of everyone left…
Really? This part seems like a real departure from how they normally run layoffs. Usually a group is told simultaneously or just after the people who were let go have been informed. Unless this refers to management level and up.

Us underlings are usually kept in the dark until absolutely necessary.

Expect more this week, silent and quick. Invite is sent out, you get on the call with your leader and then in comes HR to tell you your time is up. Word is it will be another 2,000 impacted by Friday, cuts coming to VP’s, Directors, Managers, Supervisors and PM/DM referral specialist. No one is safe and the ones that are, already know. If you haven’t been told you are safe on a company invite from your leader, where you and others are all told you are safe, sorry to say, you can be next.
