Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Performance doesn’t matter

Was laid off, been recognized for going above and beyond, exceeds expectations, etc. Don’t bust your tail for these people - it doesn’t pay off

I was a newer employee (here for a little over a year) and was laid off despite often being praised by my manager and told I had a lot of potential. As far as I know, I’m the only one on my team of ~25 who was laid off. I’m confused and just wish I knew why they picked me out of everyone.

"I really think they write out salaries and draw the line, cut the highest ones in departments. I was due for a promotion and at the higher end of my pay range.

They also hit a large number of women over age 40, and then picked a young guy to throw off any lawsuits over age discrimination. Keep getting rid of good IT people, no one will be able to work any of their complicated, antique systems."

~~~~~ This is exactly what they do. As for those laid off from IT that have deep knowledge of their complex systems, do not be surprised if you get a call from your former manager or coworker asking for help on something. It happens often after they've laid off a key IT person, and it's ridiculous.
I was laid off this week and met or exceeded expectations in all my performance reviews over the past seven years. They kept a lot of the younger workers in the department and chop the old ones. I got a severance package and will most likely get a job paying as much or more than I am making now when I leave. So, I am not bitter or mad. I always see my self as a consultant even though I worked as a employee at Centene. Your time will come when you will be shown the door. It doesn’t matter how hard you work or how good you are. The best thing to do is take the emotion out of your job and work as hard as you can but be prepared for your next move.
This below....is my fear, one day it will be me on the chopping block, but since I have so many years in the company my hope is when my time comes it will be a decent severance. It seems like so many companies do layoffs at a frequent pace that if I leave on my own accord in a year or two I could still be laid off, but with a much smaller severance package. (Since years with company often figure into the total amount)
I like my boss and I have had some bad bosses in the past, another reason why the stay and wait is more appealing eventhough I am leery of the company as a whole.
"I personally think I was axed for my pay grade and longevity since I’d cost the company more than a new hire or contractor long term."
So sorry to original poster, it really su-ks. I wish you the best of luck.
"Promotions should be reviewed by HR and not just PL, it’s clear they don’t know what they are doing. HR should be reviewing performance evaluations."
LOL that's cute. HR is clueless. At least our HRBP's are anyway.
As people in this thread are saying, performance didn’t matter
I was exceeding expectations, working at least 50 hours a week, worked off-hours shifts when asked, I’ve been with the company for almost 8 years but from my guesstimate I was on the higher end of the pay scale for my job title.
I personally think I was axed for my pay grade and longevity since I’d cost the company more than a new hire or contractor long term.
I was laid off by my director and neither of my managers were in the meeting. I definitely was a name and number on a list.
Promotions should be reviewed by HR and not just PL, it’s clear they don’t know what they are doing. HR should be reviewing performance evaluations. You saying they don’t ask why this employee hasn’t been promoted? Falls on HR and PL.
This new "leadership" team ( Sarah , Drew) don't respect hard work, they think everybody is disposable, they made it there not working hard but just talking sh-t, they don't believe in hard work. They think there's a pipeline of people needing jobs and you are just easy replaceable, that s part of the reason Centene will not advance, because it never gets enough traction to do anything meaningful
This is one thousand percent true. I have a friend that worked in IT and he was laid off this week and escorted out of the building. He told me this year his review was exceeds expectations, and his manager told him that he was putting the paper work in to promote my friend and make him a lead. Of course my friend from that told me he would work even harder, longer hours (10-12hrs daily), some weekends he would go to the office to work, stay extra late before going on vacation and make sure everything got done, used his personal cell phone for work and would tell people to call him anytime. Then six months later he gets laid off, terminated on the spot, and escorted out by security like a disgruntled employee. Just do his manager could humiliate him once more.
So yes, your productivity numbers mean nothing. Pucker up and kiss their behind and that is what gets you to stay.
You are correct, under the " leadership" of Sarah the poet is about " culture" , working hard is not what matters. Do the bare fu----g minimum, it is not whether this place is going to burn to the ground, it is a matter of when. So play the game as long as you can, nobody cares
