Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

How quickly does CAP lead to termination?

How quickly can stages move from initial, elevated, and termination? Can they decide to skip stages and just terminate?

I was placed on a CAP by my manager. I had a parent in the hospital and told my manager that I would be away to care for my parent. My manager was okay with this but six month later decided to use this situation with my parent to place me on a CAP. I eventually got off the CAP, but I was marked by the rest of the department. It became very hostile and I ended up getting laid off a year later. If you are on a CAP, just start looking somewhere else.

A CAP is their simplest way to let you go "with cause". No "package" or severance. And, filing an unemployment claim is more difficult. Plus, while on CAP, you can't post internally and you won't be re-hirable.

So, fight it. Document everything. And start looking externally.

“just one insecure person or threatened manager can make up anything just to get rid of anyone at any time.”

100%. I am definitely on the chopping block. There’s this one “kitty-kat” high-school mean girl in my department who I know doesn’t care for me, has been incredibly rude and aggressive, raises her voice at me when we have conversations that are absolutely necessary because of the particular work we do. I’ve checked around with trusted colleagues who also interact with her, and she doesn’t interact this way with them. I think I sealed my doom the day she started aggressively raising her voice in a contentious manner and I told her basically “whoops, another meeting, gotta run!” And hung up my Teams call before I said something I would regret. Now I appear to be persona non grata with my boss. Oh well. Better to hang up than tell your coworker to GFY.

It’s intentional then. Document. Determine what triggered it —as it can be a hostile workplace and just one insecure person or threatened manager can make up anything just to get rid of anyone at any time.

Political toxic workplace

I was placed on an initial cap, then HR removed the elevated cap. Then my supervisor put me on final cap from initial cap. I am thinking about going on LOA. I know that they are retaliating against me. I everything documented.

Maybe you can survive an initial CAP, but if you are on an elevated one you are pretty much pre-terminated and should spend your time finding another job.

Yes it can skip stages but depends on the offense.

I've never heard of someone who got off a CAP, and then liked their job and were liked BY their manager. So, it is time to job hunt. Good luck. It may seem scary now, but you will be better off at your next employer!

If you are in a at will state yes they can skip stages. I've seen that happen before.
