Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Three days a week mandatory starting October

Hearing three days a week in the office mandatory starting in October. Not sure how it is going to be enforced, probably honor system, but the messaging is coming soon. If you're deemed a remote employee, not sure you're exonerated anymore.

seems nobody has a clue on the repercussions of not going in. People are speculating, however, nothing formally has been stated if you don't obey.

If you're an hour commute away from a major Dell location (although they're adding more locations to this list) you're exempt. I have asked my team how long would it take to walk to work. Because few people can afford to live beside their Dell office, everyone is technically covered.

We had SUCH a productive period of time working as a team from our remote locations it is ridiculous to mess with that. I have no issue with people maintaining the social aspect of work, meeting with colleagues, saying hello, grabbing a coffee etc but to force the old scenario back on employees just seems a bit daft.

If I was a working parent and had to put a new likely easier to manage routine in place around school, home care etc I'd be very ticked off at having to start putting new logistics routines in place and additional costs for child care etc. Having the flexibility to manage hours around the already difficult process of managing a family etc was a great bonus for many people.

It's going to be an interesting couple of months if the mandate is enforced....

@7amh+1oPAUNbd I’ve been remote for 10+ years. They’re welcome to lay me off.

It's about time the company called y'all on milking the system. Time to try to squeeze back into some real pants and get to work.

it was officially announced today. If you're within 100 miles, get in the office three days a week.

heard from manager yesterday that it is indeed mandatory now to come back three days a week. No mention of what consequences are, but it is not being enforced. I believe the 100 miles radius is in effect and your exempt if you are deemed 'remote'. Not sure where this mention of 25 days per quarter came from, that is not what we're being told.

Swipe in's are being watched in Dublin just not swipe outs.

Post ID: @6wtv+1oPAUNbd

They can count swipe ins but don’t require swipe outs, at least in the US. Some EMEA/APJ sites if I remember correctly require both.

But don’t worry, they also can’t track someone writing abhorrent s-xualized content in your workspace either. Those people just get to keep on receiving a paycheck.

@3ltg+1oPAUNbd 25/quarter Is probably the metric HR will use for WFRs, I doubt they announce tracking to that

25 days per quarter? I don’t believe that. We just had a DFS all hands last week where we were flat out told it’s 3 days a week in office but it’s “flexible” so you can leave the office early on two of those days.

badge swipes....ya...good indicator. THey don't even post security to make sure people are badging in. Unless you swipe your badge on the way out also, it's not a good measurement tool.

25 days per quarter ? That's almost half the time, better than 3 days a week though. Is this for the real ?

HR here, put away the pitchforks for just a minute. It’s not a 3 day mandatory in office coming, but there are big changes coming. The new “mandate” will be enforcing 25 in office days per quarter, however you see fit to make that happen. Badge reports are an easy way to see who’s in office and who’s not.

It’s called “blocking off your calendar”. Whether you are at home or in the office, you make your calendar. Stop using RTO as an excuse to manage your life.

The pro-RTO midwits must have terrible home lives.
Bad marriage? Kids annoy you? Lonely? The workplace makes for a terrible mistress.

I think something missed by the pro-RTO folks is that one can still do nothing and slack off while going to the office. I've seen many a colleagues park their computer, dissappear for several hours but still be "working from the office "...

I think the beauty of this is when we go back to the office there will be no more out of hours work. If American colleagues need me they can contact me during my work hours. People need to start using their out of office outside normal working hours.

Just sour grapes because now you'll have to use your PTO to miss work for doctors , dentist, sick kids, etc...rather than just ignoring your work, leaving the house to do it and stealing from the company.

Covid is coming back. They have already came out with a vaccine update.

Is Dell not taking this seriously? It's life or death and they are playing games.

I will talk to my skip and email HR about bringing back mask and vax requirements.

You are playing with people's lives here every time you act as a host for the virus.

Fully remote pre-covid, not sure why that'd change now. They actually shut the sales office near me down, so now the closest campus is a couple of hours away, where none of my colleagues work. I'd actually love for that former office to be available, I'm tired of feeling stuck in my house five days a week with no travel. It'd be nice to have an office to go to every now and then just to change things up...

So we can just ignore this RTO again like most people at companies with RTOs are doing? Stupid decisions deserve to be ignored. I easily get twice as much work done at home and am more relaxed doing it, so if they have a problem with that they’re welcome to fire me

Good, at least the employees who were pretending to work will put in 8 hours every work day.
Some people live in 1960s work environment. I know of some "senior" citizens who needed a week to recover after they came back from their 4th vacation within 6 months of this year. They wouldnt look at chats or emails unless the boss was saying something.
If the lack of their input caused a wrong decision, the team member would be fired for mentioning their unspoken extra days off.
Cringeworthy work ethics. I hope Dell cleans up all this quickly or they will be stuck in the 60s work environment.

“Why would going into an office change you not taking calls outside core working hours?”

Commute time (1hr each way on a good day for many), lunch hour. School drop-off and pickup are now suboptimal. Kids doc appt require more time away/etc.

In 2014 I was approved to go from Mobile Work Force to Fully Remote. If they force back to office then they can sever me.

I’ll continue to work my other job remote and pick up another or force my wife to finally get off the couch and get a job.

This is true, there are updates coming where they say the 3 days a week is expected as opposed to recommended. However they will not be monitoring badges so again it will be up to your manager

This has been the way in Dublin for some months now.
Everything is micro managed and everything is watched.
Morale is at an all time low but management keep telling us they want to create a buzz in the office.
This is BS.
The truth is its either a soft push or they simply don't trust us.
Either way the writing is on the wall for a lot of people.
