Is this even a possiblity? I was planning to leave in January and I'd have no problem quitting right now so someone is saved.

Same here, I’m having a baby in January didn’t plan on staying too long after my baby is born. My other coworker seem to be stressed about the layoff. I would rather go than one of them be sent packing. But I’m afraid to say anything to my manager or supervisor because essentially that would be quitting, and then the company would not be required to give me a severance. 🙃
I completely agree, they should take volunteers. I'd take a severance package at this point.
