Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

As a supervisor and speaking to other managers within my department over the weekend, 1 thing is very clear, they targeted newer employees! Now, I can't speak for other departments, but within Wellcare that was their intended strategy. I had a team of 18, the 4 let go have been with centene for less then a year. There's no proof that this was a random layoff, they knew exactly who they were after. This next round of layoffs in the coming months, there's no telling how they will choose to get rid of people but I could almost guarantee hourly rates will play a part in who they let go. Think about it, if you're at $30 an hour and a coworker doing the exact same job as you is at $24 an hour who do you think they'll target esp when they are trying to "save money". Just my opinion.

I have been hearing nothing but "do what ever they ask you to - learn all you can - get all the skills you can because you never know" - nope - sorry - I am already performing 5 different job functions with no compensation. You want me to learn all I can because you downsized your workforce and expect everyone left to pick up the slack AGIAN for no bonus, no merit raises and no additional compensation. I don't think so -- the sec I find something else I am out.

I had been trying to transfer to a different department for 3 months!! Always kept in constant communication with my supervisor about transferring, the department had open roles and had a need for a lead/senior and still nothing! Oh but I was told to apply through centene careers so they could bring me into another sinking ship of a team to just get let go anyway. It’s no wonder all the good engineers left and now they’re stuck with people who couldn’t tell you what an API is

For those fortunate or unfortunate people who got laid off ( however you choose to view it at this point) !! If you're eligible for rehire or transfer ask yourself why didn't your people leader place you somewhere else or at least recommend you to a different department? Why wasn't a reconstruction/revamp placed on the table for you, prior to a lay off ? How can we salvage great people???? Just curious if anyone thought about it.... Would you seriously consider going anywhere within this corporation after you got walking papers due to someone else's negligence and not your work performance/productivity ? It's my complete opinion that they'll rehire you not do a unilateral transfer while you're on the laid off list. Nope. They'll rehire you ( possibly) less money and want a portion of their severance package paid back. Which they make out yet again😭

In my dept there is a total of about 16 people that work the same bucket of work. We have been slammed since March 2023. Held to insane production standards no one was able to meet. Last Monday 7 of those people were notified they’ve been let go. All of a sudden, last week and so far today, we have about 1/4 of the work in our queues in PCA. Coincidence??? Kinda feels like in Dec the whole dept will be axed if you ask me.

Centene is a joke. Dedicated my life work hard and consistent with my quality and work and they only offering 7 weeks severance and I been with them for almost 4 years and plus your keeping me until the end of December without a choice! Wow toxic and unappreciated! Why to work is like slaves and number and toss us out when you don’t need us! I hope they’re another class action suit against this sh---y company!

Being from Michigan (if you’re up to date on current affairs), you know there’s maaannny layoffs and strikes happening right now. I know many people being laid off or have been laid off in the past.

It is absolutely unheard of to me and the people that I have told that I get terminated last Monday but I am still required to work for another two months. I’ve said it on here before that this feels like psychological torture. I feel like I’m being bullied into submissiveness, an insult to injury that has been being an employee of Centene.

It’s hilarious that the main highlight of that town hall meeting was quality concerns. Really dug yourselves a grave with that one, board members of Centene. Our workload is being spoonfed to overseas employees who are being exploited as well. You can’t expect people working out of fear to deliver on quality. And you can’t expect people that you just fu----g terminated to be firing on all cylinders for the next two months. Sociopaths.

My god, I hope we all stay angry. I hope this forum remains active. I hope Centene gets sued for every penny they have. I hope these millionaires are haunted by ghosts, I hope they can’t sleep. I hope at least a couple of them are scrolling this forum shaking in their fu----g boots.

These layoffs have honestly put alittle fire under my *ss that I actually needed. Learning to never get too comfortable in these corporate positions....I'm getting my financial affairs in order so if in the next round I'm let go, I'm prepared.. I noticed that the 3ppl on my team who were laid off were all the most recent employees to the company.

CA got hit hard. One Department 30%. Another 60%.

Inquiring minds wonder do we need so many VPs and Officers? One Department has 3 Officers and 4 VPs.

If you have reported it to HR and have witnesses (most employees do), a personal injury lawsuit can be filed for negligent emotional distress. There are too many people experiencing bullying and harassment. Consult a personal injury lawyer in your state. This is not acceptable behavior. If HR can’t hold them accountable and their PL won’t take action, keep filing complaints. Insane that PL are taking advantage of HR lack of accountability. A disgrace that employees openly admit that HR ignores complaints.

It’s sad that people state they were targeted for disability, but these mentally abusive PL are allowed to remain employed. Then there’s mental health awareness, when it’s abusers in the organization. It’s really sickening to know that so many people are being verbally and mentally abused in the workplace without any support from anyone. Nobody cares about evil lurking in the workplace, not even HR.

I think I had that supervisor before. No accountability or consequences-HR is a joke.

What is there to do about a toxic PL that yells, harasses with messages asking “did you do this” “did you do that” nonstop on Teams, threatens everyday of a write up, and is always saying this person said that person said. Some days 15 questions on Teams. It’s mentallly draining where I can’t concentrate on my daily tasks. Yes I’m job searching, but she has a history of this for years and its really uncomfortable and unbearable. I tried HR, she retaliated. I tried her PL but they are friends so she retaliated. Until my last day, is there anyway to stop this mad woman?

was part of the layoff and honestly I still don't know how to feel. I was told on Monday through video call with two supervisors that I didn't even know, but when we got the news that there would be layoff I had a feeling I'd be part of that. Just my luck I'd be part of 3%. I'm just hoping that the severance check is pretty decent. It's kinda fishy we have to wait until the last day to find out how much we will be getting.

You don’t. I received my letter 15min after my meeting. It’s in workday…or should be.

Several people have commented that there will be additional layoffs in November and December -- am wondering where this information is coming from? I have been reading comments here regularly since this thread was started last week, and can't determine the source.

More to come...Health Net Federal Services.....lost contract final appeal in Jan. If they lose...then over the year...gone. dangling severance packages to keep exhausted overworked employees on the hook til the end. Toxic leaders all fighting for power and lying about outcomes..covering the truth of broken systems and poor morale. This isn't why we went into healthcare....greed has taken over... we know we deserve better but many are stuck....like victims in an abusive relationship.

I agree with the hostile working environment. Laid off or not the next few weeks will be micromanaged and harassment, it has already started. They know HR doesn’t care so here goes the next torturing few weeks.

Honestly, I’m wondering if legal recourse isn’t a bad idea…I was laid off on Monday and it’s literally torturous to me that I have to stay working until December under these conditions. I feel like I am being bullied and coerced to show up and meet expectations while they dangle a severance check in front of my face. This is so dehumanizing.

To those that were let go, please know you are in my prayers and I truly hope you find something that makes you feel valued, where you can actually be promoted, where are you aren’t doing the work of 2-4 people and your mind is at ease and you have peace. I thought I was only one of few who was overworked over stressed and underpaid but seems that’s all of us. Best of luck to you!

Now that I'm one day past the window for being cut (this time), I'm watching my work mailbox fill up with yet another series of 'Reply To All' -- 'I think you sent this to me in error/remove me from your list' messages from people and thinking that in a just world -- this is how they would determine who to get rid of.

Please stop telling people they should have worked harder to keep their job. I’m starting to think this is a simulation or science project of who has common sense to see reality. If there is favoritism in some areas, how can you say people weren’t working? Accept reality that nothing is fair and some people aren’t honest in the workplace. Stop only accepting your truth and be willing to listen to others because it’s divide and conquer, and no one sees through it.

RE: "Leaks where?"

Sort by age and go back several pages.

"Why are so many people shocked?" Because much like you, they are too lazy to read back several pages. FFS the very same thread you're asking about leaks in IS a leaked HR Script on how to conduct the layoff with an employee.

I was laid off. Is the uncertainty scary? Absolutely. I have a family to take care of. But I will say that my PL and specific team members that I worked with on a day to day basis were absolutely toxic and seriously impacting my mental health. When I found out I was laid off I felt an instant sense of relief. I was complacent and was applying elsewhere but never took it “seriously” as I had steady income and was able to work remotely. This layoff gave me the push to find somewhere that I can be respected, well compensated and overall happy. Like I said, I had already planned on leaving but if they want to pay me to leave, even better. This now gives me more time to focus on the upcoming holidays with my family and not have day to day stress of Centene. I didn’t realize how much of a negative impact this company had on my life until this lay off. Thank you all for speaking up on this forum and making all of us feel heard and that we are not alone. Better things are coming to all impacted! A true blessing in disguise!

I think the whole way they do thing is confusing. The department I work in I have been trained in FTC - base pay - COB got a raise for that - then advanced training no raise for that - trained in pricing no raise for that - now expected to be on call for 2 different LOBs no raise - always earned the PFP before they pulled it off the table. Outside of the measly $1.00 COLA raise I have never gotten a raise for training in more areas and doing more work. I have only been approached once about a SSA position and I declined because I don't want that responsibility. Besides I still would have had to apply for that position and prove myself - and what is the point of that?

"To those that say they were laid off for having a high salary: Was this a result of not being promoted? There are new employees coming in at higher salaries so I don’t understand how that works. If someone is exceeding and receiving raises without promotions, they get laid off because the PL failed to promote them? I have seen it, employess 8 years, hard working, not promoted but why get laid off for it? That’s ridiculous."
