Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Looks like the C-suite has made it to this comment section.

You can hang out in a downvote hole with the PR team a few pages back. :)

I am want to know where the layoffs will take place, which locations. I came back from lunch to this, I have indigestion now. I hate it for anyone that may be affected by the layoff, which could be myself. no one knows. I pray that everyone that is touched by this directly or indirectly find peace, and that the serverance packages will be adequate and that everyone finds gainful employment right away.

The only reason why they sent the emails is because the layoffs were leaked via media. The layoffs consist of government funding! They are giving our positions to offshore agents outside of the United States. Has been ongoing for many years. I've been with the company for over 4 years and in 2021 they made a bunch of layoffs at that time. Luckily I escaped those layoffs in 2021. And pray to God I'm not one to be laid off on this one. This is a very upsetting situation for a lot of people at Centene. The messed up thing is leads and supervisors are trying to tell us that we are needed and won't be laid off. However, I've already seen people on social media that have already gone through the layoff this year. They say it's supposed to happen between October 2nd and October 5th. That is not true. You can see on social media sites like tik tok and Facebook that people are already being laid off. What's even more cr-ppy is that our jobs in December 8th and our seventh package is only good till the 31st. This does not leave very much time for the people who are laid off to find a new job. Especially in this line of business. I honestly think that not only is the government funding an issue, I also feel that changes in people's coverage has something to do with this as well. We will be losing a lot of members based on the changes that have been made for 2024. Due to the fact that we are going to be losing a lot of members because they're going to be upset about their coverage and all the benefits they're losing in 2024. The company is expecting this loss, I feel like that is also a contribution to the layoffs.

I see why they lay off. Seriously. the questions and comments from employees show you cannot even READ an article that states HR is having meetings tomorrow and the next to go over how to meet with each employee one on one the week of Oct 2-5. or asking in this forum if your job will be affected like anyone knows that answer. And the funny "google Centene lawsuits" SERIOUSLY? you can google BCBS , Humana, United, the list goes on they ALL have been hit with big lawsuits from Medicare and Medicaid. If you cant see the writing on the wall when you are not doing as much work, or that they outsourced.

What type of company announces a layoff before it actually happens?! How empty-headed do you have to be to send a company-wide email notifying employees that there will be a reduction in workforce and expect any level of productivity or motivation during the waiting period? Incredibly poor decision from a Fortune 50 company. It would be in Sarah London's best interest to exit the organization. The past few months have spoken volumes about her ability to lead. Hope she feels proud at her Townhall at Raymond James Stadium. Like, what was the need for that?

Current employee. Google Centene profits.
They are realigning and laying people off but promote unworthy people with raises and Sarah London still flies in a private jet and holds lavish conferences and meetings.
All on taxpayer's tab.

I am a year two newbie with Centene. And I can tell you from experience, reading these comments, it is the same ALL over in corporate world. No where is stable of caring about you. You make the best of it while you can, ride the wave and then move on. This coming from working at a similar large scale health care company over 20 years, that would ALWAYS start layoffs just in time for the holiday season. Not having a single care of how devasting it is to you and your family for the holidays to know, you may get a package but have no job.

I predicted this as soon as they moved all the call centers to shared services. I knew it was just a matter of time. Stupidest move ever. How could they not see this coming? Sometimes I hate being right.

I would be totally shocked if everyone in my department wasn't let go. we are a small team of 14 who does DME work. Back in May they outsourced all of our work to "contractors". I constantly ask myself why are we still employed bc we literally do very little work. Does anyone know when they will let us know if we are being let go?

"My guess here is the reason they rented the professional football stadium, was not to announce layoffs, but announce a relocation to Tampa. Just speculation, but it's the only thing that makes sense as to why they rented a stadium and held a board meeting there."

I think they didn't intend to announce it at all. Centene had always been silent about layoffs in the past (was recently as August). The town hall is in a stadium because they think it will be fun, and show that Sarah is a Cool (TM) CEO. With the leak to the media, now they're forced to address it.

If their comms team is worth a damn (and the new SVP is surely paid as of she is), they will come up with an excuse to not have the speakers in the stadium. Florida staff can watch video from there, but Sarah should speak from a somber office setting.

I come back from Maternity leave next week. Within the last hour I literally picked up my phone with several texts from my current team about round 2 of layoffs. Honestly are we surprised? I don't think that i can mentally deal with this company much longer. It's been a nice run, 8 years, but i think it's time that i look for a more stable position.

Leadership instructed to tell staff the executive leadership team has not given guidance or instructions and they are so troubled by this and to attend Thursdays meeting. The communication is to give as little information to your teams so they can continue to be productive.

My last day is next week 10/06/2023. I was tole in my 1 on 1 that another round of layoffs were approaching, i didn't know it would have been this soon. Best of luck to those let go.. Oh and to answer the question about severance pay? What's that???? I've been with Centene 6 years and didn't get offered any pay out. I just had to use all of my PTO & sick leave.

First the only reason anyone got an email at all was because someone leaked this to the media - so don't kid yourself thinking that they have your interests at heart. They were going to drop a bo-b on those getting the axe in private so they wouldn't look bad in the public eye. I have been with Centene for 6 years and communication, transparency and integrity are not their strong suit at all. They just made off with 1.2 billion a few weeks back after selling & exiting the market in the UK. They are outsourcing where they can which is everywhere except Medicaid (in the US). They are going to lose a lot of employees and not just the ones they are firing.

As a little person, I sympathize with all of these comments. It's unfortunate how much money has gone into hiring "Consultants" and upper-level management (director) who do nothing but criticize and point the blame at the little people. Their salaries would likely pay for two people per. They add little-to-no value in process improvements, and only cause the little people more work by asking for breakdown after breakdown of the same thing - as if doing another pivot is magically going to give them something to go on.

It's a shame the company doesn't want to promote from within to really make a difference.

They need to tell us now if we're getting let go. I refuse to lose sleep over a company who doesn't have enough decency to be upfront. The email that "Sarah the poet" just sent to us all, showed 0 sympathy. I guarantee her and that private jet won't be affected. Real shady Centene, real real shady!!!!

I'm thinking many of the cuts will come from Health Net Federal Services - the next Tricare Contract was awarded to someone else and I believe that's their only line of business. No business = reduction in staff.

Absolutely ridiculous to send this out in an email putting everyone on edge. Every department is already taking about it, just let us know now, waiting until next week is simply making things worse. Getting laid off right before Christmas/new year is devastating. Hopefully my name isn't on the list.

THANKS CENTENE FOR THE CONSTANT ANXIETY ATTACKS

When you reach #24 on Fortune 100/500, Wall St and the Board will demand cost savings. If Sarah doesn’t do it, they’ll find a CEO that will.

I wonder if they thought of offering early retirements. I guess not.

We as “valued” employees should be able to vote on who goes, for example all the teammates that don’t do half the work or anywhere close to the amount that others do. As well as the incompetent managers/supervisors that hardly do anything or are able to help anyone on a daily bases. Let’s not get started on the directors and VPs of each department… now let’s talk about what they really bring to the company besides taking home big bonuses each year… even after the announcement of everyone else losing their yearly bonus and getting a measly 1-3% merit increase every year. Shame on Centene and their horrible company values and contribution to such a cr-ppy company morale.

This is getting ridiculous. How many times do we have to worry about our job security? We just went through this scare and the last batch of people who lost their jobs haven't even left yet! One would think working at a Fortune 500 company would lend some security. Apparently that is a myth. The absolute waste of money that we witness at the top is horrendous while we are expected to market this business with no materials or supplies whatsoever, relative to our competitors. I thought the news of the most recent layoff was done in such an unprofessional manner that caused so many to panic was bad. Now we are finding out this way only due to a leak. Even better..... The next 2 days should be productive with no one getting any sleep.

Really poor leadership to not fully address this today. Why let this linger for another two days and have everyone worry about their jobs company-wide? The truth is, most will be ok. Not a good look. The cat is out of the bag, make the announcement now

The need for restructuring was apparent to me the day I started at Centene. Waaaaay too many staff to do the work of one or two people. Wasteful and irresponsible. Now it hurts thousands of people that will lose a job they once felt secure in when hired.

There are many factors that have led to this layoff, which happens yearly in most companies.

The Medicaid redetermination is a huge factor. During the pandemic, anyone could enroll into a Medicaid plan. After 3 years, CMS is now redetermining those who are truly eligible for Medicaid, based on the original qualifying methods. There is an article from February 2023 in different Business Journals, where the CFO Asher, shares this will drop membership by 2.2 million.

Also, Centene was sued and had to settle and pay around $230 million to California, and Indiana plans for incorrect Medicaid rates to members.

With a drop in membership, ongoing legal challenges, and the reduction in revenue, it's natural to reduce the workforce.

I've been part of reduction with the company before, and it's across the board, not just low-level employees. I've seen entire departments eradicated, including Directors, and Vice Presidents.

It is disheartening that those in Tampa, FL will now join an event with a sour taste in their mouth. It is evident by the documentation in the above article that it was to be spoken in private and not during a Companywide Town Hall.
